Depends on the severity of the infraction. If it is a build up then the ban is usually less (unless you have lots of active ones in which case the length increases step by step). You can alo be banned directly if the punishment is severe enough in which case it is at the mod teams discretion as to how long for.

Is that why sometimes avatars disappear and sometimes they don't then?

Yep. Banned outright removes the avatar and usually restricts your posting rights even via PM. Build up of infractions means you can still post PM's (or that is how it was when I was a mod)

Iceman, without revealing who... is there a way for Mods to find out what, in the history of TiBB, is the highest number of infractions a member has received??

What is that number no one else has exceeded??

I'm sure it can be found out but I'd say admin would know or can attempt to find out. I'll mention it though.
