TEARFUL Kate Price was last night keeping a vigil at the hospital bedside of husband Peter Andre, who is battling a deadly brain bug.

Peter, 34, is seriously ill with meningitis, which is potentially fatal.

Kate, 28, alias model Jordan, spent a restless night at the singer’s bedside and is praying he will pull through.

She was too upset to talk about her husband’s condition as she left the family’s luxury Surrey home yesterday to return to the hospital after taking a short break.

But friends say the heavily-pregnant glamour girl is frantic with worry.

Meningitis can kill within four hours and its most common form – the bacterial meningococcal group B meningitis, which accounts for 90% of UK cases – can leave patients needing amputation of limbs because it affects the circulation.

Although doctors believe Peter has the rarer and less deadly viral meningitis, experts warned yesterday that it is difficult to be sure because the early
symptoms are so similar.

But even the lesser-strain of the bug can take months to recover from.

A friend of the couple said: “Kate has been out of her mind with worry. Pete has been really, really ill and she’s worried she might lose him.

“He’s eaten so little, he’s just skin and bone. It’s been dreadful for her seeing such a fit man as Pete waste away in front of her eyes without knowing what’s wrong.

“This kind of stress and worry is not good for a woman carrying a baby. It just seems to be one thing after another. She’s had a lot of health worries with her son, Harvey, and now Pete.”

Peter first complained of feeling unwell with what he thought was a stomach bug during his trip to Los Angeles with Kate earlier this month.

He was forced to spend a week in bed after returning to their £2.5million home in Ockley, Surrey. He was unable to eat for more than a week and was so frail he could not stand up.

When his condition worsened, worried Kate dialled 999 and he was taken to East Surrey NHS Hospital in Redhill on Saturday. He was discharged next day, but returned the following night after taking a turn for the worse.

Doctors carried out a series of tests – including brain scans and spinal fluid analysis – to try to find the cause of his problem, but were initially mystified.

At one stage they even thought it may have been a dormant tropical bug he could have picked up during his stint in the Australian jungle for ITV1’s I’m a Celebrity in 2004, where he first met Kate.

However, doctors yesterday finally diagnosed that the singer was suffering from viral meningitis. He could have picked it up during his travels over the past month. Before Los Angeles, he had also visited his family in Cyprus.

They do not know how long he will have to remain in hospital – or how long his recovery will take.

A hospital source said: “When he was admitted, Peter was very, very dehydrated. He’s been – and still is – a very poorly man. He’s weak and very frail.”

Kate is due to give birth to her third child in June. She and Peter have a year-old son, Junior, and she has Harvey, four, by footballer Dwight Yorke, 35.

Earlier this year, disabled Harvey had to be treated in hospital after he was scalded in an accident at home.

Peter’s spokesman said yesterday: “It’s believed Peter is suffering from meningitis. We ask people to allow Kate to continue as normal and support Peter and the family during this worrying time.”

The pair, who wed last September, had been filming an ITV documentary, The Next Chapter, which has been put on hold.

How serious is the ailment? I ask bacuase I think these two are cynical beyond belief and I think Jordan is a compltely vile individual. I wouldnt be surprised if this was yet another overblown story.

I haven't read anymore from any other source, GiRTh.

But if it is an overblown story, or a lie. Then it is in very poor taste and I don't think many would ever forgive them.

But, if it is true? I hope Peter get's better

He seems a nice guy, in my opinion!
