I'm watching a documentary about Marc Dutroux, I'm on the verge of tears, so many missed opportunities to rescue the girls he imprisoned and raped because of the bloody local police vs national police internal competition in Belgium. Appalling.

The national police knew this guy kidnapped girls and had even been sent a letter by the guy's mother telling them that he had two girls captive and they didn't arrest him... two little 8 year old girls were being kept prisoner in his basement in a little cell he'd made, regularly raped and eventually murdered and buried 15 feet under the ground... and the police knew, they were just holding onto the information to obstruct the local police's investigation because they were playing the long game with him. What the actual ****, so messed up. People rioted in Belgium when the truth came out, no wonder! The guy killed four girls and the local police managed to rescue the next two he'd kidnapped but bloody hell... four needless murders... the next two he kidnapped he buried alive! Awful, awful man, so upsetting

I've honestly no idea and it's never really been explained, there was an investigation conducted but it all it concluded was that there were internal problems. Duh!? I think there have been reforms since then but no official explanation of anything. The guy heading the long game investigation of Dutroux went into the basement where those little girls were being held and didn't find them, despite admitting later that he heard little girls' voices but "thought they came from outside" - he was in a basement!!! Awful, absolutely awful.

..jeez, how do you lie with something like that...I haven't heard of this case before and it must have been quite high profile world wide..do you have a link to the documentary/is it online, I think I'd like to watch it..well. I don't know if 'like' is the right word you know...but I feel that I should watch it, if that makes sense...

^There you go Ammi... definitely a worthwhile watch, it's quite old now but it raises a lot of questions that aren't answered, the Belgian justice system has a lot to answer for - the judge presiding over the case was kicked off it which sparked even more accusations of corruption and everything... it's a two-fold tragedy, on one level you have the paedophile ring and the murders, and on the other level you have the corrupt justice system's flaws being exposed

..oh thank you Zee, I probably won't get a chance to watch it for a few days but I definitely will though...isn't Belgium somewhere that is quite rife with paedophilia..maybe that and the police corruption could be linked in some way..?...

It's certainly hinted at in the video, that they tried to emphasise that Dutroux was acting on his own (well, he had accomplices but they argued that he wasn't part of a wider paedophile ring) and a lot of evidence went missing, they said quite a lot of witnesses died before they could testify at the trial (!) which is pretty suspicious... the whole thing could be smothered in cover ups at worst and at best was just a really badly handled investigation and trial. Justice was never really served for the families of the four girls who died.
