Police have declared a "major incident" in Southport after reports of a stabbing and a "number of reported casualties".

Police said a knife had been seized and that a man had been detained but urged the public to avoid the area near Hart Street.

North West Ambulance Service said at least eight people were stabbed and taken to hospital, some to a children's hospital.

In a statement, Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm that emergency services are in Southport following a major incident this morning, Monday 29 July.

"At around 11.50am, we were called to a property on Hart Street to reports of a stabbing.

"There are a number of reported casualties and more details will be confirmed when possible.

"Armed police have detained a male and seized a knife. He has been taken to a police station.

"Please avoid the area while we deal with this incident. There is no wider threat to the public."

North West Ambulance Service said it received reports of "multiple stabbings".

"We're attending a major incident on Hart Street, Southport following reports of multiple stabbings in which we have dispatched multiple resources," it said.

"We're assessing the situation and working with emergency partners."

Residents nearby have been talking to local media, with one woman who alerted neighbours and told them to lock their doors and windows.

She told the Liverpool Echo: "It was about 12.20pm, I think, and we heard loads of sirens and then there was a helicopter circling above.

"Then the messages started to go around the local WhatsApp groups, saying 'lock your windows, lock your doors', we were told a man was running around stabbing people.

"We are all absolutely terrified, panicking and sick with worry - everyone is trying to reach anyone they know in the area. I don't know how this can happen on a Monday lunchtime."

A local business owner - who called the police after the stabbings - has described the scene as like something "in a horror movie".
Colin Parry, owner of Masters Vehicle Body Repairs on Hart Street, tells the PA news agency he believes a number of "young girls" had been stabbed.
Parry also describes mothers heading to the scene of the incident and "screaming".
Police have not yet confirmed the ages or identities of the victims.

The incident is believed to have taken place in a premises called The Hart Space, a unit within the Norwood Business Centre behind Hart Street in Southport.

The unit was being used to host a Taylor Swift themed children’s yoga and dance holiday club.

The club, for children in Years 2 to 6, was due to take place between 10am and 12pm and was sold out.

A group of children ran into the street from the nursery bleeding and suffering stab wounds, an eyewitness said.

Bare Varathan, 35, who owns a corner shop on Hart Street, said he was called by a staff member who told him, “Boss, get to the shop!”

He said: “I saw seven to ten kids outside the nursery. They were injured, bleeding. They were in the road, running from the nursery.

“They had been stabbed, here, here, here, everywhere. (Mr Varathan indicated the neck, back and chest area).

“They were all aged about ten. One of them was really seriously injured.

“I hope they will be OK. Only two police jeeps and ambulances arrived, then armed police came and took him out of the nursery.

“Somebody told me he had arrived in a taxi and had a knife.”

One child was reportedly killed and at least seven people were injured by a knifeman who rampaged through a Taylor Swift-themed children's workshop in Southport this morning.

Armed police officers swooped on Hart Street in Merseyside, at 11.50am after the stabbing spree at a children's dance and yoga workshop, which locals said is usually the 'most lovely, lovely relaxing place'.

Merseyside Police officers detained a man and seized a knife after the horrendous attack that was likened to a scene from a 'horror movie'.



The force urged people to avoid the area but said there was 'no wider threat' to the public. The spree left one child dead in the quiet seaside town, the Liverpool Echo reported.

Around 25 children were believed to have been taking part in the event for schoolkids aged between six and 11 when the horror unfolded at the workshop in a hypnobirthing centre.

People at the scene said they saw a man in a 'black hood' arrive in a taxi with a knife before people were left on the street 'screaming' and 'in tears'.

Locals said they saw children running from the building and assumed there had been a car accident because a vehicle was covered in blood.

But they quickly realised something more sinister had occurred when they saw 'seven to ten kids' who were 'injured and bleeding' outside the nursery.
