good point but I think most people would want Kim back as Sam though, people were excited for the original Sam coming back but it was just a let down because the character was ruined. and she can;t act

EastEnders hardman Grant Mitchell is returning to the soap to be with his dying mum Peggy – after an absence of nearly 10 years.

Actor Ross Kemp was last seen as Grant in 2006 and news of his return follows Dame Barbara Windsor’s surprise reappearance last Friday to reveal Peggy is ill again.

The actor, 51, said: “When I was approached about returning to EastEnders for Barbara’s final episodes, it was *something I could not turn down.

“Barbara is a very close friend so when I learned of the storyline, it felt right that the Mitchell brothers are reunited with their mother for the last time.

“I am really looking forward to going back to EastEnders and filming what are set to be some classic episodes.”

Dad-of-two Ross made his first appearance as Grant in 1990 when he arrived in Albert Square alongside his on-screen brother, Phil, played by Steve McFadden.

Since leaving in 1999, he made a couple of brief returns in the noughties. In the meantime he has worked on a Sky 1 documentary series and his brand new show, Ross Kemp’s Britain, airs in March.

EastEnders’ executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins said: “Ross Kemp is top of every EastEnders fan’s return wish list.

“And being an EastEnders fan myself, he has been at the top of mine. Grant Mitchell is an EastEnders legend.

“Finally, he is returning home to Walford to say goodbye to his mother and be reunited, not just with his old loves, but also his brother.

“To have the Mitchell brothers come face to face again, having to face losing their mother, is an opportunity to show Ross and Steve at their very best.”

Grant’s return is likely to cause several dramas in Walford as Albert Square is now home to Grant’s ex-wife Sharon (Letitia Dean), currently married to his brother Phil, and Phil’s ex-wife Kathy (Gillian Taylforth), who had an affair with Grant.

Some of Grant’s storylines became EastEnders’ most iconic moments, including Sharon-gate, when his wife admitted her affair with Phil, attracting 25.3 million viewers.

His marriage and relationship with Tiffany (Martine McCutcheon), who was run over and killed in 1998, was also full of highlights.

Other big moments were Grant seting fire to the Queen Vic to claim the insurance in 1992 and his big exit in 1999, when he left for Rio after a confrontation with Phil.

Peggy is not scheduled to appear again until her final episodes in late spring, when Kemp will also make his brief return for several espisodes.

The Mitchells are involved in another big storyline at the moment as Phil *struggles to control his alcoholism.

In October, twice-married Ross dropped a big hint over his return, saying: “There has been rumours and I have never said that I wouldn’t go back.”
