And 1-Xtra and R6 are totally different stations, catered to totally different demographics.

Could go back to being BBC Knowledge maybe?

I reckon they'll just keep it as Four tbh, try and make the move to online seem like it's not that big of a deal, and it retains it's name as BBC Three.

Didn't they do this exact thing with some radio stations? People then complained and they were kept. Could well see that happening.

[ BBC Three programming will no longer be available on TV
as the channel is axed as part of the
corporation's plans to save Ł100 million.
The BBC reports that an official statement
will be made on Thursday. It is expected that
director-general Tony Hall will save the
culture-orientated BBC Four in place
of the comedy and youth-focused channel
as part of plans to save the BBC Ł100 million.
BBC Three will not disappear completely,
but will retain its brand online where
its programming will be shown through iPlayer.

OPINION: Why moving BBC Three online would be a disaster
The plans will only go through if they are approved
by the BBC Trust, which represents the interests
of licence fee payers and decided
to save BBC Radio 6 Music in 2010
after former director general
Mark Thompson planned to close it.
TV comedians including Jack Whitehall
and Matt Lucas have shown their support
for BBC Three after reports that the channel
could be made online-only by the BBC
in an attempt to save Ł100 million by 2016. ]

Yeah, 6 Music. Although that was a different case, as Radio 6 was going to be eliminated entirely, whereas here BBC Three is staying, just being moved to online only. I believe Arista was talking about it a bit earlier in the thread. I assume any BBC Three petition would have a much larger following than that of 6 Music, simply due to the audiences they are targeting.

{Every long-form programme currently broadcast on BBC3 will switch to either BBC1 or BBC2, said Hall, playing out in a late night slot at 10.35pm or later.]

Meh, I rarely watch BB3 apart from Eurovision and the odd bit of trash and I'm always at a laptop, I have no issues whatsoever, I'm glad BBC4' is staying over it.

(I could still see this going down a R6 route and staying on television if they aren't planning on doing anything until next Autumn)

The proposals have been endorsed by the corporation's
executive board, but the BBC Trust, which represents
the interests of licence fee payers, will carry out a full
consultation before giving its stamp of approval.

Yes they can stamp it by 2015

But as it stands the Trust are with this

Default BBC Trust responds to proposed changes to BBC Three

http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctrust/news/p...bbc_three.html

Quote:
Following confirmation from the BBC Executive that they will put proposals to the BBC Trust to close BBC Three as a broadcast TV channel in autumn 2015, the BBC Trust has issued the following statement:

"The Trust's priority will be to listen to the views of audiences as we consider proposed changes to BBC Three and other services.

"Any major changes to existing BBC services require approval from the Trust. In this case, we expect to conduct a public value test, including a public consultation, so licence fee payers will have the opportunity to have their say in the process."

When the Executive Board proposes significant changes to the UK public services, the Trust, in its regulatory role, must subject them to full and public scrutiny through a Public Value Test (PVT).

A Public Value Test has four stages:

1.An assessment of the likely public value of the proposal, carried out by the Trust
2.A market impact assessment, carried out by Ofcom, which assesses the extent of any likely impact on markets relevant to the proposed change
3.The Trust considers and publishes the outcome of both assessments, and reaches provisional conclusions regarding the proposed change
4The Trust consults on the provisional conclusions before reaching a final conclusion on the proposed change.
Notes to Editors
utter fact still not confirm
