They do I think, they wanted to discredit the recording that Alec had by accusing him of beating him up as well although I'm not sure how that works when he must have looked fine in the tape before Ellie kicked him.

But in Ellie's case, this is obviously a very personal thing for her. Still wrong, but they could see how it would affect her, him being her husband.

It's a bit of a stretch to try and argue that Ellie was involved in stitching her own children's father up for the murder of a family friend he didn't commit.
