Meanwhile, Alaska & Willam arrive at the State Archives and read their next clue. They are followed by Jinkx & Dela, Sasha & Shea and Kelly & Tammie, the latter of whom is still keeping an eye out for Leah Remini.



Alaska & Willam and Sasha & Shea choose Target, while Jinkx & Dela and Kelly & Tammie, arguably the two more artful teams, opt for Tower and head out of town to the bakery. The crossbow task is nearby, and Team Race Chaser soon get the hang of the practicalities of the challenge. "I’m used to shooting loads," Willam says, adjusting the position of her bow. “Loads of arrows?" Alaska asks inquisitively. "Nope," Willam replies. "Just loads."

Sasha & Shea, however, struggle to hit the first target. "I never did archery at Vassar," Sasha says, before reeling off a list of nineteen extracurricular activities that she was involved in. Meanwhile, across San Marino, Jinkx & Dela and Kelly & Tammie arrive at the bakery and begin decorating their cakes. While Team Seattle choose to pipe to the baker’s exact specification, Kelly & Tammie decide to go for a more improvised approach, one which involves Tammie piping a highly-detailed portrait of Ellen Burstyn onto the side of their cake. Of the two teams, Jinkx & Dela finish first, while Kelly & Tammie are asked to redecorate their cakes and remove references to any movie stars from the 1970s. Back in San Marino City, Alaska & Willam hit their five targets, and both they and Jinkx & Dela receive their next clues.



By this point, Farrah & Valentina are finishing up their lunch. Out of the corner of her eye, Valentina notices marked cars driving down the road, and realises that the remaining three teams have managed to catch up while they were eating. She tosses her tray across the McDonald’s, hitting a worker on the chin in the process, and drags Farrah out to their car. “We’ve got some catching up to do!” she yells, wiping barbecue sauce off her bottom lip. At the Detour, Bunny & Coco, Mayhem & Morgan and Jasmine & Kennedy all opt for the target practice, while Farrah & Valentina, in the mood for dessert, decide to decorate cakes.

Kelly & Tammie soon finish up their decorating and receive their next clue, followed by Sasha & Shea, who took their time in mastering the art of firing crossbows. At Liberty Square, Alaska & Willam arrive to read their next clue.



"My work as a professional actor has given me years of experience of performing under pressure, so this should be breeze," Willam says as she dons a traditional Sammarinese guard’s outfit. A supportive Alaska wolf whistles in the background. Jinkx & Dela then arrive, with Dela opting to perform the Roadblock. As Willam and Dela learn their routines, Kelly & Tammie arrive, and Kelly decides, against all of her better instincts, to trust Tammie with performing the Changing of the Guard ceremony, with Sasha doing the same for her team ("funnily enough, I did take a class on the national ceremonies of San Marino one semester," she says).

Back at the Detour, Jasmine & Kennedy prove to be surprisingly adept at firing crossbows, with Kennedy explaining that she gained the skill from years of hunting down drag queens who never paid her after making dresses for them. They’re next to get their clue, followed by Bunny & Coco, who claim their advantage is that they were both alive when the crossbow was invented. Mayhem & Morgan both struggle to get the hang of the task, while Farrah & Valentina, the team they had earlier been mocking, hit the ground running once they arrive at the bakery. "I don’t usually consume sugar unless it’s in a skinny iced vanilla mocha cinnamon latte," Valentina explains as she caresses a piping bag. "But for now I’ll make an exception."

Over in the city, Dela finishes the Changing of the Guard performance first, but is told that as she had been holding her rifle the wrong way the entire time, she must start again. This gives Willam a chance to pull ahead, and she executes the routine without flaw on her first attempt. Willam doesn’t even change out of her costume as she and Alaska run across the square to the Pit Stop.

To Jinkx’s delight, Dela finishes the routine on her second try. Before they run over to Phil on the mat, Dela shows Tammie the correct way to hold her rifle (Tammie had, of course, been riding around on it like a broomstick). At the other corner of the square, Shea complains that Jinkx didn’t offer any help to Sasha, who finishes the task shortly afterwards. "So much for genuine friendships," she grumbles.

Jasmine & Kennedy, having received their clue following the Detour, travel a short distance on foot to the Roadblock, and are comforted to see that only four other teams have checked in. Kennedy decides to perform the Roadblock, and credits "the dark underworld of the pageant scene" for her knowledge of how to handle a rifle. Bunny & Coco show up next, followed quickly behind by Farrah & Valentina. Both teams are held up at the Roadblock, however; Bunny struggles to fit into the extra small guard outfit she has been provided with ("she looks like the Incredible Hulk," muses Coco as she studies Bunny’s ripped trousers), while Farrah gets scared by the rifle and has to be coaxed down from a tower by Valentina. Only once Jasmine & Kennedy have checked in does either team begin the actual task.

Aware that they are now in last place, Mayhem & Morgan finally finish up the Detour, and make their way to Liberty Square. Morgan chooses to perform the Roadblock for her team, and a three-way battle between the remaining teams ensues. Each competitor takes several tries to execute the ceremony properly, but it is Lady Bunny who finishes first. She rips off her trousers and she and Coco head over to see Phil.

Watching on the sidelines, Valentina says that she regrets the earlier detour to McDonald’s, although it is unknown whether this is because it put her and Farrah behind in the race, or because all the grease from her Big Mac has now given her a poorly stomach. As Farrah struggles to remember the routine, the instructor gives Morgan his seal of approval, and she and Mayhem race over to the mat.

This means that, at some point in the next leg, you will have to perform a Speed Bump, which is a task that no other team has to perform. Additionally, you will receive no money at the start of the next leg.

Farrah: (crying tears of happiness) That’s actually a good thing. We’d probably just have used it to buy more McDonald's.

Leg 5'll follow tomorrow

Alaska & Willam are the first team to set off from Liberty Square in the centre of San Marino. They read their next clue as they do so.



"Screw Piazza Cavour," Alaska says as they begin the drive back to Italy. "I’m still trying to find Leah Remini!"

Jinkx & Dela and Kelly & Tammie set out together a few minutes later, with Kelly suppressing a yawn as she climbs into the driver’s seat of her car. "It’s too early to be thinking about Naples. Or apples. Or nipples. I didn’t sleep much last night, I’m sure you can tell," she says, as Tammie enthusiastically bops along to Italian radio in the back seat. Jinkx & Dela set off on the route first, with Tammie & Kelly following them. One-by-one, the rest of the teams begin the drive to Rimini. Well, except for Farrah & Valentina, who spend half an hour searching the empty streets of San Marino for tourists willing to part with their cash, having been given no money at the start of the leg. "We could always rob McDonald’s," Valentina suggests. It is unclear whether she is being serious or not.

Alaska & Willam are the first to arrive at the bus sign-up sheet in Rimini. Jinkx & Dela follow behind, and it is only upon arrival in Rimini that they realise they somehow lost Kelly & Tammie along the way. Six miles back down the road, Team Brown Bacon are fretting over the flat tyre that has quite literally stopped them in their tracks. "We could try blowing into it," Tammie says, telling her teammate that Allison Janney once complimented her on her lung capacity. Instead, Kelly decides to wait for a replacement car to arrive, hoping that the other teams take long enough that they still manage to get a seat on the first bus.

Alas, they do not; Sasha & Shea and Jasmine & Kennedy arrive to claim the last two pairs of seats on the first bus, with Bunny & Coco and Mayhem & Morgan taking the first seats on the second bus. As the first teams board the bus, Kennedy fantasises about travelling to the fashion capital of Italy, before being reminded by Willam that she’s thinking of Milan, not Naples. "Naples is known for pizzas, the mafia and a bunch of brothels that got buried by a volcano," Willam informs her. Everyone is impressed by her knowledge of Italian cities. As they set off on the five hour bus ride, Sasha tries to get everyone to sing So Emotional by Whitney Houston; Shea soon puts an end to this by jabbing Sasha in the face with her elbow.

Kelly & Tammie receive their replacement car and drive cautiously into Rimini, signing up for places on the second bus. Farrah & Valentina are the last team to sign up for the bus, having been unlucky in their efforts to raise money in San Marino, and having decided not to rob a restaurant and get criminal records in the process. The second bus is much more tense than the first, with each team talking about how desperate they are to avoid elimination this leg (well, except Bunny & Coco, but only because they both fall asleep five minutes into the journey and spend the entire five hours snoring like grizzly bears). Even Tammie, who would have been the first to join in with any song-singing on the first place, spends the journey anxiously biting her nails, and, eventually, her fingers.

The first bus arrives to a sunny Naples afternoon, and the teams on board - Alaska & Willam, Jasmine & Kennedy, Jinkx & Dela and Sasha & Shea - pile out to find the next clue box.

All four teams grab taxis to Via Toledo, one of the most popular shopping streets in Naples. There, they run past the Speed Bump that awaits Farrah & Valentina (each team making a whining sound as they run past as a way of imparting their good luck wishes. Or just making fun of Farrah, I don’t know), and open their next clues.



Jinkx & Dela, having completed a food-based Detour on the previous leg, decide to avoid making pizzas and instead choose Underground, with Sasha & Shea and Jasmine & Kennedy selecting the same option. Willam, who considers herself a connoisseur of pizza ("at least when I’m stoned enough"), convinces Alaska to go for Perfectly Round. "Like my ass!" Alaska cries out in delight as she reads the name of the Detour. Team Race Chaser arrive at their Detour first, and although they are at first taken aback by the sheer number of rules and regulations they must adhere to in order to pass the task, they decide to get their hands dirty (well, doughy) straight away and make the pizzas as quickly as possible. Although this tactic results in more than a few pizzas that fail the pizza master’s test, they still have enough approved pizzas to put in the oven and get their next clue.



At the underground tunnels, meanwhile, Jasmine & Kennedy are the first team to start the task, having arrived before Jinkx & Dela and Sasha & Shea. Once Jasmine has finished complaining that the hard hat she has been assigned doesn’t fit her head very well, she and Kennedy begin searching the tunnels for the marked items they are required to find. They do this in a fairly short amount of time, but become stumped when they get back to surface level and have to figure out the order that they found the items in. As Jink & Dela head down into the tunnels, they decide to make up a song to remember the order, but they soon forget this when Jinkx has to remind Dela to stay on key. Sasha & Shea then head down, and soon all three teams are back on the surface, trying to find the correct order of the twenty items. Eventually, Jasmine & Kennedy get the order right, and are handed their next clue before Jasmine can say "this helmet is hurting my ears".

The second bus, carrying a now-awake Bunny & Coco, Farrah & Valentina, Kelly & Tammie and Mayhem & Morgan, arrives in Naples at last. With Farrah & Valentina having borrowed money from the other teams on the bus, all teams travel by taxi to Via Toledo, where Team French Vanilla Fantasy encounter their Speed Bump.



"We can do this," Valentina confidently tells Farrah. "After all, we’re both works of art. I’d hang me slightly closer to the front, but still." As they head down the street to the gallery, the other three teams choose between Detours. Mayhem & Morgan and Kelly & Tammie opt for Underground, while Bunny & Coco decide not to go down into the ancient tunnels, owing to Coco’s debilitating fear of being within twenty feet of anything older than she is. "I hope I find a good panettone while I’m here," Coco says in the taxi to the pizzeria, grabbing Bunny’s arm to get her attention. "Keep an eye out for places that might do a good panettone."

Meanwhile, Sasha & Shea and Jinkx & Dela have completed the Detour, and they, along with Alaska & Willam and Jasmine & Kennedy, have been and gone at the Piazza Nazionale, where their next clue awaited them.



Sasha gets excited by the historical possibilities of visiting Pompeii, while Alaska says she can’t wait to look around the brothels that Willam mentioned earlier. Meanwhile, Farrah & Valentina finish up their Speed Bump at the gallery, with Valentina having somehow convinced Farrah that only one person can do the task, and that it should be Farrah. Valentina takes the time to spread out on a chaise longue on the other side of the room, and asks a museum guide if she can take a photo for Instagram so she can post it after the race. Once Farrah has completed the task and Valentina has FaceTuned the photo, they head back onto the street to choose their next clue; they decide to make pizza.

At the tunnel Detour, Mayhem & Morgan seem to take a more serious approach compared to Kelly & Tammie, the latter of whom spends a good five minutes touching the tunnel walls to see if anything will cave in, and being mildly disappointed when nothing does. It is therefore no surprise that Team WeHo finish the task first, and despite Kelly’s hardest attempts to copy the other team, the Brown Bacon girls are left behind to try and find the correct order. Over at the pizzeria, Bunny & Coco don’t seem particularly happy to see Farrah & Valentina arrive. "I was hoping they’d accidentally get locked in the gallery overnight," says Bunny as she rolls out some dough. Valentina, meanwhile, applies some gloves and gets to work.

Alaska takes on Roadblocking duties for her team, joking that the crux of the task is just "fancy tipping". Jasmine & Kennedy soon arrive, followed by Jinkx & Dela and Sashea, with Jasmine, Jinkx and Shea opting to do the task respectively. Alaska uses her surprisingly strong knowledge of Roman mythology to finish first, with the other three not far behind (despite Jasmine inviting Neptune to go and smoke weed with her mid-task). Each team is then handed their next clue, along with a surprise.



"Look, it’s you!" Shea says to Sasha, holding the egg up against her head to compare the likeness. The four teams each hail taxis from Pompeii back into Naples, with Alaska & Willam waving one down so fast that you’d think the volcano had begun erupting again. At the castle, located on the seafront in Naples, Phil spots a car pulling up and a team running out…

Back at the pizza place, Bunny & Coco pay extra attention to the wording of the document they have to use (“who knew the ability to read would come in handy?" Bunny asks, perhaps assuming that Farrah & Valentina do not possess this skill). Team Legendhairy manage to make ten pizzas before the French Vanilla Fantasy girls, and they leave the pizzeria in the direction of their next clue with tomato sauce smeared across their faces like tribal war paint. At the same time, Mayhem & Morgan are on their way to the Piazza Nazionale, while Kelly & Tammie realise that they are making little progress with the tunnel Detour and decide to try their hand at pizza-making instead. Team Brown Bacon arrive at the pizzeria as Farrah & Valentina throw yet another rejected pizza into the bin, with Farrah making the appropriate whining sound effect to go along with it.

Mayhem & Morgan and Bunny & Coco both receive their next clues at the piazza, and head towards Pompeii. In their taxi, Coco pretends to interview Bunny, asking her what it was like to have the eruption of Mount Vesuvius spoil her bat mitzvah. Upon arrival, Mayhem and Coco opt to search for the Roman gods respectively; after flirting with the statues in exchange for information, Mayhem finishes the Roadblock first, followed by Coco, who spends ten minutes nosing around the brothel part way through the task. Both teams receive their next clues, although it is only when they have arrived back in Naples that Mayhem & Morgan realise that they left their egg back in Pompeii. They turn around in the other direction and race back towards where they left their egg, giving Bunny & Coco the chance to squeeze ahead.

The pizza-making is not going well for either team, but Kelly & Tammie’s decision to make up a song, ‘Margherita Man, Send Down Your Cheese’, gives them the determination to finish the task. It gives Farrah & Valentina the determination to stick dough in their ears, which soon makes them run out of dough to actually make pizzas with. Eventually, Kelly & Tammie finish the Detour first, with Farrah & Valentina leaving approximately ten minutes later. As Farrah & Valentina begin the drive to Pompeii, Valentina dons sunglasses and a silk headscarf, like a glamorous Italian woman from the 1950s. "Do I look like Sophia Loren?" she asks Farrah. "Is she the woman from Modern Family?" Farrah replies.

At the Roadblock, Valentina and Kelly choose to search the site for the twelve gods. Kelly imagines what it would be like if Laganja were still here and says "yes gawd" whenever she spots a statue, which amuses her if no one else. Valentina, meanwhile, compliments each god on their outfit, and starts a conversation with the goddess Ceres about style advice. The Roadblock is more a matter of luck than anything else, and it becomes apparent that luck is firmly on Kelly’s side. She and Tammie, who has spent the duration of the task eating volcanic dust, depart for the Pit Stop, egg in tow.



Kelly & Tammie… you are team number seven!

Farrah, Valentina and their egg make their way to the Pit Stop, aware that this probably isn't going to be the second non-elimination leg in a row.

Phil: This would certainly have been a less interesting show if it weren't for you two.
Valentina: Wait, this was being filmed?

Stunned by this revelation, Valentina goes off to get an iced latte, while Farrah goes off to find somewhere to turn the egg into an omelette.

Seven teams remain in the race.

As dawn breaks in southern Italy, Alaska & Willam are first to depart the Pit Stop.



All teams arrive at the airport in the order they finished the previous leg, and manage to all board the next available flight out of Naples, putting the seven remaining teams on an equal playing field. Kelly, who is beginning to feel the exhausting effects of the race, tries to get some sleep on the plane.

Upon arrival in Madrid, the teams travel by taxi to the monastery, with many of the queens speculating as to what the secret cookies could be. "If there are no drugs involved, I’ll be highly disappointed," Willam says rather firmly. Alaska reminds her that they are travelling to a nun’s convent, and that uncovering an illegal narcotics ring operating from inside a nunnery would be an unlikely task for the producers of The Amazing Race to assign the teams.

Indeed, there are no drugs involved in the task, unless you happen to be addicted to shortbread biscuits. Jasmine & Kennedy are the first team to arrive at the plaza where the monastery is located, followed by Mayhem & Morgan, but both teams spend several minutes wandering aimlessly around the outside of the building, unsure as to how they are supposed to order cookies from inside. The rest of the teams then quickly show up, and it is Jinkx & Dela who find the hidden alleyway where the cookie-ordering window is located. Dela orders the cookies for her team, and a nun’s hand appears from the dark to hand them their next clue.



Tammie, proficient in the Spanish language as she is, notices a sign which says that the window closes at one o’clock, as this is when the nuns go for siesta. Rather than making them want to hurry (the teams arrived in Madrid late-morning), Kelly suggests that they both go for a siesta as well. While Team Brown Bacon find a spare room in the monastery to have nap, the other teams collect their cookies and their clues. For the Detour, Jinkx & Dela, Bunny & Coco and Sasha & Shea decide to Find the Note, while Alaska & Willam, Jasmine & Kennedy and Mayhem & Morgan choose to Find the Net. Kelly & Tammie, who opted to Find a Bed for the afternoon, eventually wake up and, feeling somewhat energised, head to the football stadium.

Despite the mental image of drag queens taking penalties in one of the world’s most famous football grounds being one that could strike fear into the hearts of sports fans and homosexuals alike, Alaska & Willam end up being quite good at the Detour (I won’t repeat any of Willam’s comments during the task, as I’ve already written enough balls puns for one game). Mayhem & Morgan also get the hang of it, or at least they do eventually after Mayhem’s boot comes flying off and it collides with the goalkeeper’s face. Jasmine & Kennedy do not find the challenge coming as naturally to them; although Kennedy manages to score a few to begin with, Jasmine isn’t able to connect, and ends up wheezing in all possible directions while Kennedy does most of the hard work.
