The world's largest scientific instrument, the Large Hadron Collider, will be switched on in Switzerland on Wednesday. A few people are worried that the LHC may cause the world to be swallowed up by a black hole, especially when it starts to operate at full force in the spring. What would happen if you fell into a black hole?

Your body would be shredded apart into the smallest possible pieces. Neil deGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, who wrote the definitive account Death by Black Hole, imagined the experience as "the most spectacular way to die in space."

A black hole is a place where the force of gravity is so powerful that you would need to be traveling at a speed faster than the speed of light to escape its pull. Since nothing in the universe is faster than the speed of light, nothing that falls into a black hole can ever escape. The border at which gravity becomes strong enough to create that phenomenon is known as the "event horizon"; it marks the outer boundary of the black hole. (Until the 1940s, some scientists believed that matter crusted up on the event horizon and didn't fall in.)

I think I will by a gun and take a less-painful way out.

OK

Lets get some science done here

Suppose the Sun were to be come a black hole, which it won't because it is too small, (Only very much larger stars collapse to form black holes), we would still continue to orbit it. We would not be sucked in.

There would still be the same amout of gravity exerted at this distance.

With the idea of mini black holes, they will evaporate as soon as they are created due to Hawking radiation, or our understanding of quantum physics is seriously up the spout, which is what we use for our computing and semi-conductor industry.

Every day, we are hit by more energetic cosmic particles, and we have not been sucked into a mini black hole or a strangelet. The LHC is not doing anything more than happens already in nature.

Anyhue, today they are just getting it to send protons around the main ring. The collisions do not take place until 21 October.

Well to be honest, I cant see how a black hole could even be created. A black hole is created when something Implodes, such as if a star collapses or "Implodes". If 2 atoms hit each other they are more likely going to explode.

I have been saying this for ages now... it takes a lot more to create a succesfull black hole than 2 atoms! Also guys you are missing a big point, it gets turned on tomorrow, it wont even be on full speed until spring.

I agree and the whole thing will be on for 25 years so we aren't going to die today.
