Former Manchester United and England star Brian Greenhoff has died at the age of 60.

The skilful centre-half, who also played in midfield, passed away at his home in Rochdale this morning.

Brian, who was born in Barnsley, joined United in 1968 after representing Yorkshire Schoolboys.

He played in the same team as his brother, Jimmy, who joined the Reds in 1976.

Brian lifted the FA Cup with his beloved United in 1977 and won a Second Division winners medal in 1975.

He made 271 appearances for the Reds, scoring 17 times and won 18 caps for his country.

Brian's first-team bow came at the age of just 20 in 1973 and played his last game for United in 1979.

He was worshipped by the Stretford End and something of a cult hero with fans recognising him as one of their own.

Brian headed back across the Pennines to join Leeds United following his stint at Old Trafford and later went on to play for and coach Rochdale.

He moved with his family to Menorca before returning to Rochdale and last year wrote an autobiography.

Police were called to Brian's address this morning following reports of a sudden death as a matter of procedure.

The case has now been passed to the coroner.

De Gea makes winning start

David De Gea kept his gloves clean as Spain made a winning start in the UEFA Under-21 Championships, recording a slender 1-0 win over Russia in Jerusalem on Thursday.



The Manchester United goalkeeper played a full match as part of an experienced team that is hoping to win back-to-back European titles, although Julen Lopetegui's champions were partly frustrated by a combination of their own awry finishing and some stubborn Russian defending.

In the end, the match was ultimately decided by substitute and debutant Álvaro Morata, whose headed goal eight minutes from time means Spain sit joint-top of Group B ahead of Sunday’s clash with Germany, who lost their opener to Netherlands.

Elsewhere in the tournament, incoming Reds forward Wilfried Zaha hopes to face Norway on Saturday after missing England’s disappointing 1-0 defeat to Italy earlier in the week.

The former Crystal Palace star, who will officially join his new team-mates at Old Trafford on 1 July, was an unused substitute against the Italians but manager Stuart Pearce has confirmed the player trained on Thursday and will be in contention to start this weekend.

In reality, the Three Lions must win the match to stand any realistic chance of qualifying for the semi-finals on 15 June.

Del Piero could face Reds

Alessandro Del Piero looks likely to spearhead the A-League All Stars' attack against Manchester United in Sydney next month.



The Juventus legend, now playing his football in Australia for Sydney FC, was selected in the largely fan-voted squad for the game at ANZ Stadium on Saturday 20 July.

The 15-man squad was whittled down from an initial shortlist of 35 after more than 30,000 supporters cast their votes and an expert panel, including All Stars coach Ange Postecoglou, had its say.

The squad is subject to change and will eventually contain 18 players, with some of the initial choices expected to be unavailable due to injury, international commitments and transfers.

Japanese midfielder Shinji Ono is on the provisional list, as is German Thomas Broich and veteran Australian striker Archie Thompson.
