History shows that white people used the word to be hateful. Thats why its unacceptable for them to use it. Why would a white person want to use it anyway?

I don't think anyone should use any form of the N word anyway.

You are wrong. A lot of white people use the word. I'd even go as far and say that majority of them use all versions of N the word. Especially the people in the South. That area in the US is infested with racist people.

Thats also a bad explanation, its hard to explain, but bottom line, we can say it, you cant.
I know what you mean, its like reclaiming the word, its not gonna be the offensive term it was once used for, its yours not theirs...

If the shoe was on the other foot it would definitely be racist.
Yeh but discrimination has a more powerful and detrimental affect when its minority groups that are being discriminated against and the word was used offensively by white people for a long time, why would any black person be comfortable with it now, its crazy to think they should be?

Well said. This is a ridiculous thread to begin with, where certain peoples lack of understanding is so evident. That word has a weight of history and connotation associated with it that means it shouldn't be used by anyone else. I feel the same way about the word Paddy - to a lesser extent- as it was used to discriminate against us in our history, and would probably lose the head if it were used on me by anyone other than a fellow Irish person.

It is an offensive word. And it is crazy to think that black people would be comfortable with it, let alone use it in each other's company.

Cheers man. The lack of understanding saddens me, why arent they teaching this **** in schools? I had the benefit of growing up in one of the most diverse cities in the UK, a family that taught me discrimination is wrong etc, not everyone has that. It should be a major part of the national curriculum from an early age.

So why is it unacceptable for white people to use it, but to some people it is acceptable for black people to use it? Surely if it was that hateful they'd want to rid of the word completely?

Whilst what you're saying is true, the point I'm trying to get across is a word is either offensive or it isn't. If certain groups can use a word, then why can't all groups? Black people forget about the historical context when they use it in a friendly way, so why is it double standards when they can't forget about historical context if a white person is to use it in a friendly way?

Well because the groups using the word arent using it offensively for one and that they can be sure of. But its a difficult one to grasp I'll grant you that. I guess its like taking a word that caused offence and humiliation and turning it on its head, its fighting back and not letting it beat you. Its like if a gay guy calls another gay guy a big "****" in a jokey ironic way, its flippin the negative use of it and taking the hurt and offence out of it. I spose in a way we should be celebrating the fact that young white people see that word as a street term and dont really understand the offence it can cause, but that doesnt disregard it still does offend and I guess it'll be a long time before the negative associations are fully eradicated like

YOu will wxplain it over and over again, until red in the face. THose who insist on wanting to use the word, will pretend they dont understand what youre talking about (they understand perfectly well).

The world is complex, all need to be said. There is problems going round all the time.

If only this whole racism issue stops being an issue thats one less thing to worry about in the world.

Cant everyone go around being black or white and just be proud of it?
I for one would laugh at the fact at being called something to do with my skin colour (food wise), everyone should be allowed to take the mick out of themselves, but words that shouldnt be used are the normaly N word and all that.

A black mate called my white mate "White Trash" surely thats the same thing as a white person calling a black person the N word?

I don't want to use the word, I can't stand it to the point where I won't even type it let alone say it, but I think its double standards if its fine for a black person to say it in a non-offensive way but if a white person uses it in the exact same context, they're racist. Its double standards and as I've already said, ironically racist.

If black people genuinely find it that offensive, then why is it acceptable to use it in a different form?
