Default The Rangers Thread

Rangers Football Club are an association football team based in Glasgow, Scotland, who currently play in the Scottish Premier League. The club are nicknamed the Gers, Teddy Bears (from the rhyming slang for the same) and the Light Blues, and the fans are known to each other as bluenoses. They are sometimes referred to as Glasgow Rangers, although the word Glasgow does not form part of the club's official title. The club is incorporated as The Rangers Football Club plc. The club's home is the all-seated 51,082-capacity Ibrox Stadium in south-west Glasgow.

Rangers have won 52 domestic league titles, more than any other team in the world. They have won the Scottish League Cup 25 times — more than any other Scottish club — and the Scottish Cup 33 times. In 1961 Rangers were the first British team to compete in a European final when they reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup. They won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1972, having been the runners-up in 1961 and 1967, and were runners-up in the 2008 UEFA Cup Final. An estimated 150,000 Rangers fans made the journey to Manchester for the final, most of whom did not have tickets.

Rangers' players and fans today are multi-national and of various religious and political affiliations, although the club have traditionally been identified with and favoured the Protestant and Unionist community of Scotland, as well as the Unionist community in Northern Ireland. For most of their history, Rangers have enjoyed a fierce rivalry with their cross-city opponents Celtic, and the two are collectively known as the Old Firm.

WALTER SMITH insists fans shouldn't get too excited about the possibility of Rangers ending up in pot two of the Champions League group phase draw.

The Light Blues will move up from the collection of third seeds if two of the first and second-seeded teams who are currently going through the qualifiers fail to make it.

Atletico Madrid lead Panathinaikos after thier Champions League first-leg qualifierAt the moment, that's a distinct possibility with Atletico Madrid leading Panathinaikos 3-2 after the first leg of their tie in Greece.

Fiorentina also drew 2-2 with Sporting Clube in Lisbon and have home advantage in their second meeting.

Both Atletico and Fiorentina have lower coefficients than the SPL champions, meaning Gers would become the 16th-ranked team in the competition were they both to progress.

Of course, moving up to pot two means Gers would avoid the likes Real Madrid - but they'd still run the risk of meeting some other leading European names.

As such, Smith is urging caution and said: "It would be nice to move up a group of seedings.

"When you look at the teams in pots two and three though, there's not a lot of difference between them and I don't think it changes things much in terms of the overall draw.

"From our own point of view, all of the games will be difficult and if you have a look at pot four, you'd find a lot of teams you'd have great difficulty getting past.

"It would be nice for the club to be amongst the second seeds and everybody would be pleased if that did happen but I really don't think it would matter a great deal if were there or among the third seeds. We are just hoping to do well."

Jerome Rothen: I turned down English Premiership to join Rangers

Sep 2 2009 By Craig Swan

JEROME ROTHEN revealed he slammed the door shut on a glamour Premiership move to agree a deal with Rangers.

The 31-year-old last night sealed his one-year loan switch to Ibrox from Paris St Germain just 48 hours after a transfer to Schalke in the Bundesliga collapsed.

Winger Rothen was quickly contacted by Blackburn chiefs and offered the chance to head for Ewood Park and the bright lights of England's top flight but with Rangers boss Walter Smith also on the case the player admitted his choice was simple.

He said: "From a sporting point of view it was more important to come here.

"Blackburn called before Rangers but I don't think they have the same ambitions as a club.

"Here I have a chance to win awards and to win titles and, of course, the Champions League is a big draw for me."

Rothen hopes his move will revive a career that had gone stale after five years in the French capital.

The attacker also hopes the road he has taken from Paris to Glasgow leads all the way to South Africa.

He has lost his spot in the France set-up, having won the last of his 13 caps two years ago in a qualifier against the Faroe Islands.

The former Monaco ace has not been to a major finals since making up the squad for Euro 2004 but hopes that will change.

Rangers.' participation in the Champions League will give Rothen the opportunity to showcase his talents on the biggest club stage of all again and it's a chance he is desperate to take.

Raymond Domenech will soon piece together his party for South Africa 2010 if the French can negotiate their way out of Group 7 ahead of Serbia or via a play-off and Rothen hopes to catch his eye.

He said: "I hope so. Obviously, Rangers are involved in Champions League competition and it is the most watched there is.

"If I play well I hope I get the chance to play for France again."

Record Sport columnist Mark Hateley believes Rothen will soon become a fans' favourite at Ibrox.

He said: "Rothen has a great engine, great technique, a great left foot, he will take the ball in all areas and possesses a great delivery. He will be a big asset for Rangers."

The same could be said about Adebayor, though - he tailed off from Arsenal but he's still a goal scoring footballer. Just because his talent was overlooked or clouded doesn't mean he's lost anything.

That said, he is a background footballer - sets things up, good set pieces, good work making spaces etc.
