so, she had a really low blow with her comment, because he CAN speak English relatively well, what he lacks are the minor cultural codes which are something one only picks up with time.

If I had been there, I'd had said "olha aqui, sua vaca! vamos falar em português então... já que você é tão debochada comigo em inglês" (=look here, you cow! Let's speak some portuguese, then...since you are so debauched with me in English)
