Post Should some topics be banned?

On one board I am a moderator on they have certain rules on what topics are allowed to be debated

According to one lot of their rules

Quote:
Due to the contentious nature of these subjects, forum participants are strongly advised to avoid discussing religious and political issues. Please don't begin or contribute to a topic that's merely going to incite or fuel a flame war.
There are minor exceptions but these are heavily policed.

One of the other banned topics there are 9/11 conspiracy theories

So the suggestion is, should we have similar restrictions on such topics here, as they seemed to get heated and may lead posters to infract the various rules on decorum and civility. I have seen a few examples on the religious angle and as we approach a general election, partizan politics could also hijack the board.

There may be other topics some might feel if they are mentioned, they might cause trouble.

for now my suggestions for forbidden topics are:
  • Politics
  • Religion
  • 9/11 Conspiracy Theories

The only one I have seen that I thought should have been banned - was some idiot harping on about 24 children being killed and how he didn't give a damn. Who wants to read that sort of vile nonsense.

If they were to be banned, we might as well get rid of the Serious Debate section. I think so long as they stay in there (and are therefore policed a bit more strictly) - they're fine.

Why restrict activity?

Lets be honest this place is hardly full of life these days, needs as many topics and discusions as possible.

That was me and i did care i was just saying alot of people don't care and it is not a suprise im from the country where those children died it was a topic that was basically focusing on how people care more about celebs like cheryl cole than children dying and starving, thank you very much.

There is a conspiracy about 9/11 that it was all planned or something by George Bush or that George Bush had dinner with Sadam Hussein's brother on the day or day before or something.. or that the government caused the outbreak of the foot and mouth disease. Well anyway.. nothing should be restricted. It is good to talk about EVERYTHING. Otherwise serious matters in politics, etc, will not be solved.

EVERYTHING should be discussed. However when personal attacks are made this is when action must be taken. Well depending on how serious the personal attack is. People have to learn to "agree to disagree" Same with religion and politics around the world.

Theres that film on the internet called zoo something.. about the government knowing more than what is letting on but obviously is not explicit in the media.. and that all human kind will be controlled with micro chips and stuff. I forgot what the film is called but its online.. Because the government and most powerful people in the world are brainwashing us.. but I said to my friend at the time who told me about this film "maybe the film is brainwashing us"

I suppose in everything like this, everyone is lying.

All the things in the bible which true followers are meant to go by.. in other words a lot of views from people are hypocritical. Why cant people agree to disagree How long is the world going to last? The human race is going to kill each other before the sun gets even close to the earth.. In the next 100 years we have had it I bet

As long as these topics are discussed in a mature manner then there should be no problem. I think banning any subject is retarded.

WTH???
Why? This is not the USSR. I think, people these days, can express themselves, and make their feelings known, without any need for censure. Honesty, is always the best way to develop as a human being.
At least no one gets physically, hurt with typed words! Regardless of the issue.

As part of an internet discussion forum we should be allowed freely to discuss any topic that we want to to. If we have an opinion, we should be allowed to express it.

Personally I don't think ANYTHING should be banned, unless it's illegal. We should be allowed to freely discuss anything we like and say anything we like to anyone and about anyone, be it good or bad. Rules which stop people having an opinion on something are ridiculous.
