According to UFC President Dana White, current UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar is very ill and will not be defending his title any time soon. ESPN Sports
“He’s in a hospital up in North Dakota somewhere right now,” said White. “He went to Canada and some bad stuff happened to him, so we’ve got to figure it out. “He doesn’t want to talk about it publicly, but he’s in bad shape. He’s not well and he’s not going to be getting well anytime soon.” Champion Lesnar was going to defend his title on Nov. 18 against top contender Shane Carwin, but Lesnar had to pull out of the fight due to a medical condition, it was later discovered that Lesnar had mononucleosis, however White said that the champion has other problems as well. “I am worried about it,” said White of his biggest star’s medical situation. “You know, I can’t really talk about it right now, but he’s in rough shape. He’s in really bad shape … and we’re going to have to do some stuff to take care of this guy. He is not well and he’s not getting any better. With the Heavyweight Champion out for a while, this probably means that the UFC will have to set up an interim title match sometime soon, but for now we can only hope Lesnar gets better soon and back to defend his title.

Yesterday, Dana White told the Associated Press that Brock Lesnar is recovering from a bacterial infection in his intestinal tract. White is still encouraging Lesnar to check into the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota for further treatment.
WCCO-TV, which is the CBS affiliate in Minneapolis, adds that Brock Lesnar is suffering from diverticulitis. Diverticulitis is a disease which is usually found in the large intestine. It forms large pouches on the outside of the colon, which then becomes inflamed. Treatment for diverticulitis usually involves no solid food, only being fed through an IV and an aggressive antibiotic treatment. Also, in severe cases, surgery can be required to remove the infected area of the colon. Surgery is usually avoided, unless it is a severe case, which Lesnar's appears to be. Dana White once again said that he does not know if Lesnar would fight again.

Brock Lesnar is back at his home in Alexandria, Minnesota, recovering from a bacterial infection.
Larry Novotny, Lesnar's chiropractor, said that Lesnar was released from a hospital in Bismarck, N.D., earlier today, and that he won't be making any decisions about his career until his health has improved. UFC President Dana White said earlier today that Lesnar underwent "minor surgery", and White flew to North Dakota for the surgery. White noted that Lesnar is feeling better, but is not sure if he is out of the water yet, and is still encouraging Lesnar to check into the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota for further treatment.

This is a shame. And of course if he was to fight again there is a strong possibility that he will simply never be at the level he was at before. It's not just the surgery and the illness, but the road to rehab that takes it's toll. In particular, this would radically alter his diet.
Look at Triple H. He was never the same after his quad injury and rehab in 2001. |

UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar’s health has been shrouded in mystery ever since he had to withdraw from a title defense against Shane Carwin, initially scheduled for UFC 106 in Los Angeles.
His trainer, Greg Nelson, in early December confirmed to MMAWeekly.com that the champion’s malady was diagnosed as diverticulitis (an infection in the digestive tract). Yet, his return to fighting, or even training, hasn’t been so easy to pinpoint. “We’re not really pushing it right now. We’re just letting things take their course so he can be 100-percent healthy when he starts to train,” said Nelson. “But right now, he’s just taking the time to properly heal.” ADVERTISEMENT The situation will hopefully gain some clarity later this week when Lesnar goes back to the doctor to find out if he is getting better, or if he will need to have major surgery that at best keep him out two years and at worst end his career. “This week Brock Lesnar is going back to the doctor, getting fully checked out by one of the best doctors and hospitals in the world,” relayed UFC president Dana White on Saturday night. “If the doctors say things are going well and things are going in the right direction then maybe we’re a few months away from him coming back. If it’s not going in the right direction, he’ll either be done and have to retire or he’ll be out for a couple years. So, hopefully we get good news.” The UFC has already taken the first steps in moving the heavweight division forward, regardless of Lesnar’s prognosis. The promotion on Saturday announced UFC 111 for March 27 in Newark, N.J. The event features a headline bout between UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre and challenger Dan Hardy, but also a heavyweight interim title bout between former champion Frank Mir and No. 1 contender Shane Carwin. Lesnar has quickly become one of the leading pay-per-view draws for the UFC, but that’s the furthest thing from White’s mind when it comes to his heavyweight champion. “The thing that I’m concerned about most is Brock Lesnar, that he’s okay. I’m not looking at Brock Lesnar and saying, ‘oh Brock,’ now he’s gone and we’re gonna lose all these pay-per-view buys,” White declared. “What I’m thinking about is I hope Brock’s gonna be okay. If he has to have this major surgery, you’re talking about changing the quality of this guy’s life forever. Pay-per-view buys? I could give a (expletive) about that. I hope the guy is healthy.” Lesnar is a polarizing figure. He’s one of those guys that you either love or hate, there’s not a lot of in between. And he’s tended to be more on the receiving end of boos than cheers. But according to White, that’s part of what makes him so great. One way or another, he gets people excited. That’s something people would miss if he can’t continue his career. “It’s funny because all the people that were booing and hating him, they’re all sitting back now and thinking about what life would be without Brock Lesnar. He’s exciting. He makes it fun. He’s a nut and you don’t know what he’s going to do. He’s like our Mike Tyson.”

As a friendly reminder, UFC president Dana White and Brock Lesnar are expected to hold a press conference early this week to update the MMA world on the heavyweight champion’s health.
“I will have something for you guys by Tuesday or Wednesday [this week],” White told Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com. “I’m probably going to hold a press conference in Las Vegas. Brock Lesnar will be there.” As for what the topics of discussion will be, White remained mum on the matter per Team Lesnar’s request. “I don’t know if it’s good news or bad news, it’s just news,” White coyly stated. Considering Lesnar hasn’t said jack since falling ill in early November, the fact he’s ready to face the public means significant information should come to light.

Lesnar felt ill for a long time. When he was in Canada, he suffered an acute diverticulitis attack. (Diverticulosis, the development of multiple small, pouchy areas in the colon because of either genetic misfortune or a poor diet, is present in a portion of the population; when the areas become inflamed or infected, the ensuing abdominal pain and general malaise is termed diverticulitis.) Lesnar returned home, was hospitalized, lost 40 pounds while subsisting on an IV diet intended to rest his colon, and faced the possibility of career-threatening surgery.
As of yesterday, a CT scan revealed that diet modification had eliminated or significantly reduced the diverticula (the pouches), something both Lesnar and Dana White dubbed "a miracle." (Normally, the only way to eliminate these areas is to cut and resection the colon; they do not simply get bored and disappear.) As of now, surgery isn't imminent. Lesnar has regained 30 pounds. Cosmetically, he looks like he could crash a car and walk away laughing about it. What remains unanswered -- and hopefully it's something Lesnar's doctors are exploring -- is what, exactly, caused Lesnar to develop the diverticula in the first place. Medical literature points the finger at a Westernized diet high in fat and low in fiber, which makes the colon strain to pass waste. Although athletes generally aren't expected to be guilty of poor eating habits, a Lesnar special on Spike a year or two ago showed him devouring a cheeseburger and fries following a workout -- complete with an explanation that Lesnar burns so many calories that he can afford to indulge. I would hate to see what one of his cheat days looks like. Lesnar is expected back in the Octagon in the summer, likely against the winner of March's Shane Carwin-Frank Mir interim title bout.
