The tears were definitely real, you can't fake things like that, and if she was faking it, surely she'd have gone to the Diary Room for even more attention?

No she hasn't - she was genuinely upset! Not surprising really! If women could still be accused of being witches and burn't at the stake - poor Katia would be no more, if many on this forum had their way!
