Default Golden Globes

I was hugely dissapointed with the Golden Globes in terms of who they decided to honour -apart from the legend that is Jeff Bridges-but, in terms of Ricky Gervais' performance I was amazed to see that he didn't tone down his act at all, to the dismay of many in the audience but to my sheer and utter delight. He strikes me as a guy who has decided to stay true to himself and not give a shite about the repercussions.

Gervais was immense, loved that Mel Gibson line haha.

In terms of the winners, Avatar should definitely have not won the best picture -Drama, shocking decision. Up in the air, The Hurt Locker were much more worthy winners. But as its the Hollywood Foreign Press, they tend to lean towards the more mainstream movies and its success, which is what Avatar is.

I expect to see it nominated for Best Picutre at the Oscars especially with 10 movies up for the award this time, but the academy may have more sense and give it to a more worthy movie.

I'm not so sure. Unfortunately they'll go for Avatar as it's getting bums on the seats again and I think they all know that they f3cked up by not nominating The Dark Knight last year. It's all politics baby. The only thing that might lose it votes is the fact that District 9 and Star Trek - 2 other sci fi's - might be up for the award too, and could spread the votes out a little more. Shocking stuff that it won though. Cameron was even a bit embarrassed over it.

Absolutely, how on earth that didnt get nominated was just criminal.

Did you see Jason Reitmans (Up in the air director) face when they announced the best picture winner? He looked pi$$ed, and rightly so.

I saw him, yeah. Usually they can hide their anger but it was totally understandable that he felt like that. I would too after making such an excellent, individual and non-generic flick. Have you seen it?

Yeah I have, enjoyed it a lot. A lot of people said George Clooney's performance saved it from being totally forgettable but I thought the story was excellent, and the supporting cast were good too. A very good film indeed.

Better than Avatar anyway, that's for sure. I was surprised it was even nominated for best film.

Me too, I didnt find the story original nor inspiring. It was just a special effects bonanza. To even be nominated for best picture was a joke in itself but to win it just takes the cake.

Were there any other winners that you didnt agree with?

Thought District 9 should have gotten best screenplay. Haven't seen Bullock's film, but I thought the girl in Precious was amazing. Have you seen A Serious Man? Was strange to see Downey Jnr win best actor in a musical or comedy.

Bigelow should have won best director.

There's really no middle ground with somebody like Gervais. You either love or hate his particular brand of humour.

No I havent seen a serious man. I thought Downey Jr was good in Sherlock Holmes but the award should have gone to Joseph Gordon Levitt imo, hes come along way since his teen days in 10 things I hate about you and was impressive in (500) days of summer.

I also agree about the director too. Cameron certainly hit the jackpot this year.

I'm not normally a fan of Gervais but he was pretty funny. He did a good job; it could have been an absolute disaster.

As for the awards, I for one am glad the committee didn't take the high brow approach this thread has taken so far () and honoured the film event of the year with the two most prestigious prizes

you've just pointed out the flaw yourself - it's an event, not a film. Everyone's going for this new take on cinema, for the 3D experience, because everybody's talking about it. The fact of the matter is, as a film, it's good. Not great. It's got no real depth to it, not emotionally, socially or politically anyway.

Read into this turn of phrase what you will.

And the latter part of your post is complete subjectivity that many (including the Golden Globe committee) disagree with.

The Golden Globe committee is comprised of a select group of foreign journalists who have obviously sold out big time baby.

So you've already said. And its effect has had as little impact this time as the last time you mentioned it

It wasn't intended to have any effect on you: it's just a statement of fact. Too much money involved with Avatar to honour any smaller, more deserving winner.

It wasn't supposed to have any effect, yet you still posted it twice in reference to my posts?

And "a statement of fact"?! Given the thread topic, nothing, except the actual winners, are "statments of fact".
