Default PlayStation Network In Leap-Year Meltdown

Sony's PlayStation network has gone into meltdown after a bug left thousands of consoles unplayable.

Owners of PS3 consoles are tweeting they can't play PS3 Originals and that the Play Station online network is down.
Some users are reporting they cannot load games with "Trophies" or play Premium Themes. Others are reporting their Trophy data and high scores have been wiped.
When they attempt to log-on, gamers are reporting the following error: "8001050F - Hardware failure. Cannot update Firmware or connect to internet".
Some users also claim they are unable to pay games previously downloaded from the network.

Since offline systems are affected, it is suggested a firmware error could be to blame rather than a network error.
There are rumours it has been caused by a leap-year miscalculation, as the fault emerged overnight as February rolled into March.
Many PS3 owners are reporting their console clocks have reset to December 31, 1999 or January 1, 2000.
If this is the reason, it will be embarrassing for Sony, though they should be able to solve the problem by releasing a 'patch'.
It's not yet clear how many users have been affected. Though with 33 million users worldwide, the number is likely to be significant.
Sony is keeping users updated via Twitter. They advise: "We're narrowing down the issue and continue to work to restore service to all. Updates as soon as we have them. Stay tuned".

The issue raises the spectre of what became known as the Millenium Bug, or Y2K.
Millions of computers were predicted by experts and the media to crash at the turn of the century, because they had not been programmed to recognise the year change. But it did not happen.
However, some computer systems had problems when 2009 rolled into 2010. This was known as the Y2K+10 problem.
It resulted from confusion between the way computers encoded binary and decimal numbers.
David Wilson from Sony UK told Sky News: "We're working flat-out to fix the problem.
"We've got guys here working on things and our Japanese team have been working through the night to get this sorted.
"I'd advise users to be patient until we can get the problem solved.
"Those affected can still use their machines for offline play or other functionality that doesn't require network access."

Sony claims it has fixed a bug in the PlayStation 3 which crashed millions of consoles for 24 hours.

In a released statement, the games manufacturer admitted the fault had been caused by "a bug in the clock functionality".

What they mean is the internal clock on the console was programmed to recognise 2010 as a leap year, when it's not.

Gamers who booted-up their consoles on 1 March 2010 recieved the following error: "An error has occurred.

You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)", or the date of their PS3 systems were re-set to Jan 1 2000.

When users tried to re-set the date and time via the Internet, their consoles informed them: "The current date and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)"
Users were also not able to playback certain rental videos downloaded from the PlayStation Store, before the expiration date.

Sony had stressed the bug was only affecting older, 'fatter' consoless, not the new slim ones.

"If you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data."

Then within a few hours they apologised for the inconvenience and revealed service had been restored.

"We have verified the symptoms are now resolved and users are able to use their PS3 normally.

Users around the world have been cautiously tweeting their joy at the news:

mumblemiler: "So, Mr Sony. Yesterday was the 29th Feb 2010 was it? And today it's magically the 2nd March? Hmmm"

jonchoo: "So same leap year bug as Zune? And I thought computer engineers were supposed to be clever..."

martyrmane: "Cant tell ya how good it feels to log on to #PSN...Thankx #Sony....#MW2..i maight just play sum #NBALive"

Other gamers called for Sony to be sued after they lost years of precious 'trophies' and saved games overnight:

"Everything is lost!!!! THANKS ALOT!!!!!!I hope sony get sued and have to pay millions !!!!!!!!"

The PS3 is the third home video game console released by Sony. There are estimated to be three million PS3 consoles in the UK.

As bad as the PSN is, Sony's online strategy is still lightyears ahead of that Nintendo ... thing.

Not sure if he has retired but he certainly has less involvement in Microsoft these days.

Awesome. Awesome to the max.
