Default Hurray hurray.

WOMEN will be allowed to serve on UK submarines for the first time, it was revealed yesterday.

The first 20 female submariners will sail on Vanguard-class subs carrying Trident nuclear missiles.

But allowing women on submarines could lead to sex scandals, it was claimed last night.

Some Navy chiefs fear Wrens and male sailors living together in close quarters will break strict "no touching" rules.

Initially, five women officers will be deployed with each of the four Vanguard-class nuclear subs' 135-strong crew. But a naval source said last night: "There is concern over what might happen.

"If there was a sex scandal it would be impossible for anyone to be taken off until the sub returned from its three-month patrol. The Navy will go to great lengths to make sure that the first women are officers with impeccable credentials."

With the widespread knowledge now of gay and bisexual relationships - I don't see how the women/men on submarines together excuse can wash any longer!

Everybody is screwing everybody these days - regardless of sex - what difference does it make?

Its considered a breach of discipline for people on the same ship to have relationships, causes resentment because sailor A is biffing sailor(female) B, while sailor C's girlfriend is elsewhere, etc.

Over the 3 months, tempers can become frayed enough as it is with people working, eating, sleeping etc in the same confines. Add in the possibility of a break up between A and B and the development of another relationship between either party and someone else.

That was the why women weren't allowed on submarines when they were allowed on normal ships. At least on ships you have resupply helicopters and supply vessels where one or the other party could be removed from the ship.

At last people in the Navy are coming in to the 20th century(yes I know we are in the 21st but them give another few years to catch up).

Yeah - I know all that - just seems ridiculous that when the whole world has been aware and generally accepting of gay and bisexual relationships for some time now - it rather makes that argument redundant. They should have changed it years ago!

Yep thats true. But what you have to remember is the people who make policy decisions are so far up the food chain and so out of touch with reality.

But the amusing thing about it is the ban on homosexuals serving in the forces was lifted in 2000, as yet women still arent allowed to serve on submarines, for fear of relationships affecting morale and discipline, this is a trial to see if its okay. Consequently the forces had a policy that could be seen to be positively discriminating in the favour of homosexuals. How is that for weird?

Mind you it is only the Navy, the Army and the Air Force have been letting them get at it for years.
