What's so inherently comical about Peter Tatchell? I can't think of anyone who has devoted more time and effort to human rights causes and still not care how unpopular it makes him.

I think it's just time we accepted the Catholic Church serves little purpose nowadays. John Paul II was guilty of a lot of the same things as Benedict XVI and cosied up to Reagan and Thatcher, but he was a fundamental force for progress in Eastern Europe and helped turn Poland into a democracy. The current Papacy is basically everything that was bad and hypocritical about John Paul II minus the redeeming qualities.
