Don't like 'em. They bring the tourists in, but do little else. They no longer have any real power, just the capability to influence politicians.

Yeah, London. Great big dirty city, with rich and poor alike. Nothing that special. The royals are a joke anyway, sort of like the country's irritating mascots.

Agreed. I live in London, but still fail to see the point of the Monarchy.

The Queen is our country's Head Of State acting on behalf of our elected Government and has worked tirelessly for over 50 years well into her retirement.

For people to say the Monarch does nothing shows a lot of ignorance at what the role of our Head Of State. If you want to get rid of the Monarchy and replace it with a President (with Britain becoming a republic), then I'd like to draw you to the problems in France where Jacques Chirac won just 18% of the vote in the first round of the French Presidential elections on a turnout of around 50%. Hardly a resounding mandate from people. Yet astonishingly Chirac made the final ballet to face an extreme Fascist called Le Penn in the final race to become French President. It was a case of better the devil you know then the devil you don't as millions of French people turned out in droves to vote for somebody they didn't want (Chric) to stop the extremist (Le Penn) gaining power. Now Chirac is in power for 5 years with no way of deposing him while he hires and fires his country's Prime Minister.

I like our Monarchy because they are inexpensive (66p or something a year per taxpayer) and give our country some identity. Bear in mind this country has been governed by a Monarchy for centuries and kept us free from invasion during some very dark periods of European imperialism slicing up the New World. If its not broken dont fix it. Whatever you replace the Monarchy with will be no better, so whatever part of the UK you're from be proud of what we have and stop knocking it.

An 'identity', indeed? Do you not think that if the country's relying on a frighteningly dysfunctional family to give it an 'identity', then we're in serious trouble?
How do you know that whatever we replace them with will be no better? That might be the case, but how do you actually know?
And please don't tell me what I should or shouldn't be proud of, I think that decision is left to me.

For people to post in such a patronising manner shows extreme ignorance. This is England, not France. There's a massive difference between a nation that's not had the burden of royalty for 157 years and one in which the majority of the population want to see the German tourist evicted from her palatial environs - along with her Greek husband and their in-bred, doltish offspring. The French, as a nation, are not the type to endure oppression from within by any means, as history clearly indicates. Yet they've been happy with the status quo for the past 47 years, which tears a massive hole in your already flimsy argument.

Both Shakespeare and The Beatles are far greater tourist attractions. They give the nation more than enough 'identity'. This country hasn't been 'governed by a monarchy' for hundreds of years, and invasion has been thwarted by nothing other than the lives of countless working class men, press-ganged into military service and used as cannon-fodder.

We have absolutely no need for royalty, and the nation would be all the better without them. Move Lizzy Windsor into a nice semi somewhere, and open Buckingham Palace as a museum in the care of The National Trust. Scrap the hand-outs, repossess the Duchy of Cornwall and all the other stolen assets, and give the money to the pensioners - the people that really have 'worked tirelessly' for the good of the nation.

Not a fan, past it's sell by date by a long chalk. Vestiges of the feudal system, serfs, peasants, class system etc.

However, a monarchy is preferable to a dictatorship. At least they are toothless.

I do love our history though - "I may only have the body of a weak and feeble woman", "my kingdom for a horse", "once more into the breach" etc, etc.

Or is that just the Shakespearian take on it all?

What a ridiculous thing to say! Worked tirelessly ? You show me 10 occasions where the Queen has done this and I'll squirt mustard over my words and eat them before you can say 'God, save the Queen!'

Great post ROB. I don't like the royals myself - nothing against them personally, but I don't see the need for a royal family.

I like history, and am fascinated by the royals of the past. However, they ruled the country and made the laws, today's royal family just sit around, leeching their money from the tax-payers.
