A large earthquake has been recorded off Sumatra in Indonesia, triggering a local tsunami alert.
The US Geological Survey said the epicentre of the tremor, which had a magnitude of 7.8, was at sea, 127 miles west-northwest of Sibolga and was at a depth of 28.6 miles. The Indonesia quake agency says at least three aftershocks have been felt off Aceh, which was badly hit by the Boxing Day tsunami of 2004. Power cuts and panic were reported on Indonesia's Simeulue Island off Aceh. witnesses said. A tsunami watch was issued for the region, said the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Honolulu.
