![]() Police in New York foiled an attempted car bomb attack in the heart of Times Square thanks to a T-shirt vendor who saw smoke coming from the explosives laden vehicle, officials said Sunday. Bomb squad officers discovered propane gas tanks, fireworks and timing devices loaded into the back of the sports utility vehicle after the T-shirt seller alerted authorities around 6:30 pm (2230 GMT) on Saturday. There was no immediate claim of responsibility although the state governor said it was the work of terrorists. "We are very lucky ... (to) avoid what could have been a very deadly event," the city's Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at an impromptu press conference early Sunday. "The bomb squad confirmed that the suspicious vehicle indeed did contain an explosive device." Bloomberg also said the bomb was homemade and "looked amateurish" but "certainly could have exploded." New York Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner Raymond Kelly said the device consisted of three propane tanks, consumer-grade fireworks, two gasoline containers, wires and two clocks. "The attempt was to cause a significant amount of fire," he told reporters. Police began "observing white smoke inside and coming out of the rear of the vehicle," Kelly said, and "began to clear pedestrians." The vehicle was moved to a police location, where it will undergo closer scrutiny. Meanwhile, New York state Governor David Paterson called the failed bombing attempt an "act of terrorism." "Luckily, no one is hurt, and now the full attention of city, state and federal law enforcement will be turned to bringing the guilty party to justice in this act of terrorism," Paterson said in a statement. The governor said New Yorkers owed a debt of gratitude to the police and the vigilant T-shirt vendor. The vendor, a Vietnam War veteran, told police officer Wayne Rhatigan that he became concerned after he saw smoke coming from the Nissan SUV. "I did a lap around the vehicle. The inside was smoking," Rhatigan later told the New York Daily News. "I smelled gunpowder and knew it might blow. I thought it might blow any second." Times Square, one of the busiest areas of New York, was locked down for hours before being reopened as security forces entered a huge manhunt for the driver of the dark green Nissan Pathfinder. "We do not know who drove the car," Bloomberg said. "We have no idea who did this or why." Kelly said that the vehicle had license plates belonging to a different vehicle and had been caught driving in the area just before the incident. Firefighters, then bomb squad staff were called in. No detail was given on how the components were meant to have fitted together and whether the clocks were used as timers. IntelCenter, a group that monitors extremist activities, also said the attempted attack was a "significant terrorist event." But the the Virginia-based center said it was "too early to determine" the group or individuals behind the bid. The bomb scare raised tensions across the United States where security forces have been on edge since a Christmas Day alleged attempt by a Nigerian man to set off a bomb on a US airliner. The White House said President Barack Obama had been briefed on the incident in Times Square. "The president commended the quick action by the NYPD and asked John Brennan to communicate to NYPD that the federal government is prepared to provide support," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said. Brennan, who is the president's deputy national security adviser, is working with the NYPD and others and will continue to keep the president up to date on the investigation, the White House said. New York City police are on constant alert after a string of terrorist plots and alleged plots in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks. In December they closed Times Square while inspecting a van at first feared to contain a bomb, but which turned out to be carrying nothing dangerous. In February, Afghan immigrant and self-confessed Al-Qaeda agent Najibullah Zazi pleaded guilty to a plot to set off bombs in New York's subway system. The 25-year-old could be sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction, conspiracy to commit murder in a foreign country and providing material support to the Al-Qaeda Islamist network. Last year, four New Yorkers went on trial in an alleged plot to bomb a synagogue in the city and shoot down military planes. Nearly 3,000 people died in the 9/11 attacks when airliners hijacked by Islamist suicide squads slammed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in Manhattan, demolishing both sky scrapers. I love the way the media bring in all the Islamic attacks in the states but conveniently forget to include all the homegrown nutters who commit terrorist attcks over there, including the Aryan Brotherhood, Animal Liberation Front, Army of God, Black Liberation Army, Jewish Defense League, Ku Klux Klan, Symbionese Liberation Army, Weathermen
Then of course we have the nutters including 1978 to 1995 — The Unabomber attacks. A former math professor — Ted Kaczynski, known by the code name UNABOM — sent out numerous letter bombs to academics and other individuals associated with with modern technology. 1995 — The Oklahoma City bombing was carried out by right-wing extremist Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols. It killed 168 people and remains the deadliest act of domestic terrorism in U.S. history. 1996 — The Centennial Olympic Park bombing was the first of four carried out by right-wing Christian and anti-abortion activist Eric Rudolph. 2001 anthrax attacks believed to be carried out by Bruce Edwards Ivins, a scientist who worked at the government's biodefense labs at Fort Detrick in Frederick, Maryland 2009 Holocaust Memorial Museum shooting by 88 year old James W. Von Brunn, a neo Nazi. Last edited by Shasown; 02-05-2010 at 02:08 PM. |

Yes but the bomber was at the Right place a Tax Office. Manhatten is General Public. Someone was reported as running away from it he or she failed as it did not go off. For Example Khan the 7/7 London Leader Evil Bomber knew how to connect all the bits to Expload with it one of them failed and ran up to a Bus and was able to connect it all without being bothered by anyone. |

"The Pakistani Taliban has reportedly claimed
responsibility for the attempted car bomb attack in New York's Times Square." Good job it did not go off. It was Pakistan members that attacked Bombay with Ak47's. Not like them to fail. I wonder what the Next Bomb or Attack will be. Maybe another part of America. |
