REVIVAL

HE vowed it would never happen — but Joe Calzaghe is considering a comeback.
The Welshman hung up his gloves after outpointing Roy Jones Jr with a dominant display at Madison Square Garden in November 2008. But it now appears he is willing to risk his 46-fight unbeaten record by agreeing to a rematch with Bernard Hopkins in Las Vegas. Calzaghe, 38, defeated Hopkins via split decision in his first ever fight on American soil in April 2008. The Executioner, who floored his opponent in the first round, to this day maintains he should have been declared the winner. And he could get the chance to set the record straight after Calzaghe held talks with Golden Boy chief executive Richard Schaefer. Schaefer said: "Joe has expressed interest and so has Bernard. "We will try to make it happen in the autumn." Calzaghe, who has also been linked with a rematch with Robin Reid, has struggled to adapt to life outside of boxing. He pulled the plug on his promotional company earlier this year and was also exposed as a social cocaine user. It is unclear who Calzaghe would be trained by if he does return to the ring. His father Enzo was in his corner for every one of his bouts but he has played down Schaefer's comments. He said: "There is no truth in it — and I would be the first to know." Hopkins, despite being 45, continues to box on and has picked up three victories since losing to Calzaghe. He schooled former middleweight king Kelly Pavlik and most recently avenged a loss to old foe Jones. |
