Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop. Try getting P.S.P. 9 or Studio. They're more... well, easier layout me-thinks.

Thanks for your advice Ziola & Lance, I'll have a look at all of those mentioned and then decide which it'll be best for me to get

It's up to version 10 now, but they've called it X. There's quite a bit of improvement on the latest version, judging by the information Corel have on their website.

If you're going to choose between PSP 8 or 9, go for 8. There were hardly any significant changes in version 9, and you can get PSP 8 for silly money now, too.

Current Amazon prices:

X - £89.99

Upgrade to X from any previous version (PSP 4 up) - £49.99

9 - £39.99 (Cheapest Amazon Marketplace price, otherwise £89.96)

Upgrade to 9 - £31.97

8 - £12.99 (Cheapest Amazon Marketplace price, + £1.45 p+p)

Adobe's Photoshop CS2 will set you back a cool £439.99.
