Default Are you interested in the Tory leadership?

Im quite interested.

Im with Mr Dickin in that Im not for or against any party,Im just an interested spectator. For some reason I enjoy election campaigns and changes of government.

One thing im adamant on is that I dont want Brown as the PM.

Id vote for Ken Clarke if he won the leadership contest, but I dont think Id vote for the other 3.

I think it would have been great if Hague had put his hat into the ring. Id definitly vote for Hague.

Um... well, elections are won in the centre ground, and lost on the fringes (why do you think Tony Blair is so successful). So that means Kenneth Clarke. That's my advice to whoever's voting.

Don't know much about this Cameron fellow though.

I'm definitely a Labour voter. Can't see myself voting for the Tories in the future unless there are some radical changes.

I am intersted in the leadership contest though. I like Ken Clarke, but I think he's too old, or certainly will be by the time of the next election.

I blame bloody Thatcher for most of my problems.

Maggie is only 15 years older than Ken Clarke.

Most of the people in the Lords are over 80, anyway!!

As a Conservative party member, I'm very much interested in the leadership contest and have even urged my local association (not that it will make much of a difference!) to get party members to vote for David Cameron. If the party wants a leader with youth, charisma and personality who will be able appeal to a wider electorate of both sexes, all classes and, more importantly, young people then Cameron is the man. If the party seriously wants to win the next general election they will elect him as the new leader. As much as I like Davies and agree with a lot of his views he doesn't possess the necessary leadership qualities to lead the party and win an election.

It has to be anyone but Cameron

David Cameron was asked a direct question, did he take coccaine, which he refused to answer.

What has he got to hide?

A refusal to answer must mean that he did take cocaine, what else are we to infer. Even Kenneth (traitor) Clarke answered the question indicating he never took it.

Taking class A drugs is a criminal offence and it is plain wrong for a person who broke the law to be part of the legislature. If I were in the constituency party I would be calling for his deselection as this stain makes him unfit even to be an MP.

Those who make our laws, which we are expected to obey must be above reproach and suspicion. David Cameron fails this miserably.

By default, it has to be David Davis

(Pity Mrs T could not be brought back)

I disagree, I think it was unfair that he was even asked that question, are you trying to tell me they there are no Mp's who havent taken drugs?

IMO, the whole thing is a witchhunt.

The chances are he has never taken hard drugs. But he knows that if he answers 'no' to the question 'Have you ever taken cocaine?' the next question will be... 'Have you ever taken cannabis?'.

Not answering the question is not an admission of guilt... unless your name is Joseph McCarthy.

If thats true Sticks, then who will be the politicians of the future? All those at Oxbridge are cokeheads.

I didnt like Cameron until I saw him interviewed on C4 t'other when he was pressed on the drugs issue. He seemed confident and relaxed and unflummoxed.

He could take on Blair and win. I was originally all for Clarke and said that I would not vote for the Tories again if they didnt elect Clarke, but the more I see of Cameron, the more I like.

That said, I will not vote for Davis no matter what- the guy is a joke, all 'look at me Im a working class lad'. Well Im as working class as they come and hes nowt like me or my friends.

If Cameron did take class 'a' drugs at Uni then I wish he would just come out and admit it because I think people will have a lot more respect him if he did, and he may well do so after the leadership election is over. I suspect he may be worried about losing votes from the older blue-rinse members of the party who generally look down on that type of thing if he said something earlier and came across as a hellraiser in his youth.

And there is a misconception about the Conservative party, what it stands for and members being a load of toffs and all that. Thats nonsense. My parents came from humble backgrounds working hard to afford the luxuries in life. My Dad started off practically with nothing owning a small fruit & veg stall in Chigwell then working as a London cab driver and my Mum working as a secretary in the city (between bring up the kids). My Dad still considers himself working class but has always voted Conservative, same as my Mum. Why? Because my parents are both selfless and not part of the 'whats in it for me?' fraternity. They believe, as I do, the Conservatives are best to lead the nation. Im not saying everything the party does it right but I agree with the main ideology of the party.

The Conservatives are not dead as a political force as proved at the last general election when they polled the most votes in England turning the South-East of England a sea of blue, yet Labour winning 60 more seats because of a silly 'first past the post' system and having inner cities with more parliamentary seats which favours the Labour party.

I think it is a pretty foregone conclusion that Cameron will be the leader.

This is essentially a good thing as I feel that when the populace have seen past his 'I was a normal student' hype, they will realise that he is yet another chinless arrogant ex-etonian.

Student days are great, you get to mess around and all but a few live life to excess, try a bit of this and that, radicalise their views, and think they are the generation to cure all of society's ills.

Then they slowly are absorbed into the masses, and revert to type.

Everything which the tory party stands offends me. It's too extreme, too self-absorbed, too elitist.

He will represent them admirably.

In my humble opinion ofcourse!

I could argue with ROB but I'd only be wasting my time (and hers). There is no point in having a debate with somebody who has a distorted view on the party and its members based on either a> bad experiences under a previous Tory government b> a few loose cannon Tory MPs who make stupid statements to the press from time to time.
