Default Some advice from any music fans out there.

I'm a real big fan of music but have never really taken the time out to listen to something new, it's just the same old modern main-stream stuff that I hear on the radio and TV. I know that a lot of you are into music and when reading lists of songs that a lot of you post there is a lot of music that I've never heard of, but quite like when a take a listen on Spotify. I was just wondering how you manage to find all of this music and whether there are any ways to find music that is suited to stuff you already listen to. Sorry, just my Ipod needs some new stuff on it and I can't stand any recent music that has just hit. (Jason Derulo etc.)

Depends what sort of stuff you like.

Listen to I Won't See You Tonight Part 1 - Avenged Sevenfold, it's personally my favourite song that's ever been created.

Also, Fade to Black - Metallica is amazing.

I have the same problem much of the time being mostly a classical listener and it has had the knock-on effect of making me a total snob. The only artists (in popular music) this year that have really grabbed me are Tame Impala and Flying Lotus.

I would wholeheartedly recommend those two though.

Get last.fm.

It takes stuff that you like and recommends you stuff that's similar.

I've recently found a love for Fairground attraction - and it's made me think about older music. Loads of people say that music has gone downhill in the past 10 years so I just wanted to get a taste of what music was like. There's obviously the hugely famous songs that I have heard but I've never looked into it. Thanks for your thoughts guys

Look at the Top 40 singles every week.

They're normally good.

I agree with whoever said last.fm, it's fantastic.
Even if you don't wanna become a member, each artist has a page of 'similar artists'.

My advice would be to look at what you like now, then look at who the greats of that kind of genre were. Pop - ABBA, ELO, Fleetwood Mac; Rock - Led Zeppelin...so on. As for contemporary stuff that you wouldn't really discover because it's sidelined in favour...of...Jason...De...twato... well, someone recommended Last.FM and I would agree. Their charts (overall charts) are a good indicator of what's good and what isn't: there're a lot of Radiohead listeners but that's about the only irregularity (at one point they had more than The Beatles ). However in terms of recent stuff - artists like Yeah Yeah Yeahs, White Lies, Bloc Party - they tend to have greater plays than more successful and mainstream pop acts than, say, Sugababes, Usher or Iyaz. So I'd recommend their overall charts.

Oh and I'd also recommend reading websites, magazines or whatever about music - Q in particular has a good hold on good new material. NME are a bit too pretentious to say the least. I get a lot of my new artists from this monthly playlist they produce - 50 tracks to download this month. In most cases, the songs will be available to listen to on the website.

If you want decent music, don't look in the charts, it's filled with mainstream crap. :/
You gotta dig deep in music to find good stuff.

Try listening to Iron Maiden, they're a classic British metal band.

Some good songs by them are: Run To The Hills, Flash of the Blade, The Trooper, Powerslave, Hallowed Be Thy Name, Number of the Beast.

And in my opinion, their singer has got the best voice in the entire world.

ELO = pop great?
2baha/

And I'd really recommend getting a last.fm account so that you can get artists that are tailored exactly to your specfic taste and then the more artists you add to your library to more varied your recommendations become and it's a good way to discover artists you would otherwise NEVER hear of.
