Default Premier league imposes homegrown talent rule

I think this is a great idea long overdue and a very clever way of getting around the strict EU free trade restrictions. Basically a premier league squad is now restricted to 25 players above the age of 21 (as many under 21's as you want in addition to this) 8 of the 25 players must be homegrown talent i.e. they must be english or must have spent at least 3 years before they reach the age of 21 (their development years) playing football in england this is an F.A. initiative in response to englands poor performance in the world cup and for once the F.A. have done a great thing and in my opinion deserve a lot of praise for this.
This will help the england team no end in the long run.
You could argue in the short term it may harm premier league teams progress in europe for a few years but i think that its worth it.

Arsene wenger is opposed to it and moaning he may have to start selling players (no suprise there)

Liverpool seem to have reacted very positively to it (which is great to see ) by signing joe cole (english) and danny wilson from rangers scottish young player of the year and only 18 so when he is 21 he will be classed as home grown

This link probably explains the new rule better than i can.

So what do you think? a good thing or not?

Apparently according to the rules Fabio and Rafael will be home-grown, but Owen Hargreaves won't because he was in Germany between the years of 18 and 21. Being English doesn't give you the right to be a home-grown player

Thats stupid, if your english your english that should count?!

Ridiculous.

The rest of it though is great for the national team..

Theo Walcott
Cesc Fabregas
Carlos Vela
Denilson
Nicklas Bendtner
Alexandre Song
Johan Djourou
Gael Glichy

I believe are all homegrown. (im not 100% though).

I don't agree with these anti-foreigner rules. You'll just end up with a weaker, lower quality league, in my opinion.

The big clubs will get round this. They'll start buying 14 year old foreign players.

No surprise is Arsene is against it.

Owen hargreaves is bit of a strange case and maybe even a 1 off.

This isnt as harsh on the foreigners as it seems on the surface you will still see the likes of arsenal putting out teams that dont even include an englishman but it will give the english players that might have have otherwise has their careers capped at championship level or in the reserves a chance to develop their game at the highest level and it will give them more of a chance to reach their maximum potential.

Meanwhile Owen Hargreaves who is an English citizen cannot be termed as a home grown player because he spent his early days with Bayern Munich academy and never played in England or Wales for that matter before being 21

Or it puts more emphasis on putting more time, effort and money into home grown talent and the academies, helping the clubs financially and the international team ten folds

I'm all for it. The Premier League has become a sort of League Of Nations; good for winnng european competitios, but bad for the the national squad.
