CORONATION STREET’S kings of comedy Kevin Kennedy and Ken Morley are set for a sensational comeback.

The Street legends will return to commemorate the show’s 50th anniversary.


Ken, 67, played supermarket boss Reg Holdsworth for six years until 1995 and Kevin, 49 – who spent 20 years with the show until 2003 – was his Bettabuys sidekick Curly Watts.


They are both understood to be overjoyed at the prospect of working together again in Weatherfield.


The self-confessed clowns are currently awaiting scripts that put their characters at the centre of a 50th anniversary spin-off Corrie DVD. The soap’s supremo Kieran Roberts is believed to be behind the massive coup. Filming is due to start later this month.


The move will undoubtedly thrill millions of soap fans from the Street’s glory days, when TV Times magazine’s readers bestowed the title of Best Soap Star Ever on Ken.


A Street source said: “Some Street fans put the double act of Ken and Curly ahead of all the other amazing double acts down the years, from Stan and Hilda Ogden, through to Mavis and Derek Wilton and right on up to Jack and Vera Duckworth.


“Getting the pair of them back for a Christmas special DVD will be a massive seller this festive season, especially as it coincides with the 50th anniversary celebrations.


“The plot lines are absolutely top secret and only a handful of people at the ITV studios know about the project.”
It is understood that former assistant producer Gavin Blyth, who masterminded Corrie’s 2008 Out Of Africa spin-off DVD, was consulted about the logistics of the project.


He was headhunted for the job of series producer at Emmerdale last year.


The Street source added: “The whole project is extremely hush-hush.


“And the news has been overshadowed after it was revealed that a tram crash will be the highlight of the 50th anniversary celebrations.


“But for millions of true fans and dedicated viewers, the real highlight will be the return of Randy Reg and Curly.”


Kevin is currently rehearsing for a starring West End role in the hit musical We Will Rock You.


He has had a string of stage roles since leaving the soap, including a worldwide tour with Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.


Ken, who went on to fill his mantelpiece with awards for his portrayal of Reg, later penned a book called Knowledge Is Power: My Life On Coronation Street.


And he wrote: “Working with Kevin was always wonderful.


“The on-screen comedy chemistry we had together was obvious from the first time we met on set.”

Coronation Street comic favourites Curly Watts and Reg Holdsworth are returning in an hour-long special. The duo - actors Kevin Kennedy, 48, and Ken Morley, 67 - will feature in a one-off special this autumn as part of the show's 50th anniversary.

Gormless binman Curly, who left in 2003, and Bettabuys manager Reg, last seen 12 years ago, will be shown meeting by chance and going on holiday. An insider said: "They're brilliant comic actors - we're delighted they're back."

EX-Corrie stars Ken Morley and Kevin Kennedy say they can't wait to return for the soap's 50th anniversary.

Ken, 67, who played Reg Holdsworth, and Kevin, 49, who played Curly Watts, were two of the ITV soap's biggest stars in the 1990s.

The actors will return to film scenes for a Coronation Street DVD to mark the half-century.

Ken, who quit 15 years ago, said: "It is tremendous to be working with him again."

Kevin, who left in 2003, added: "It's great to be back with my old sparring partner - it will be a lot of fun."
