Default Coldplay announce split at Brit Awards

Coldplay's announcement at last night's Brit Awards that they will be taking a break has signalled to many the end of the band completely.

Singer Chris Martin announced as the band were accepting their second award of the night for Best Album that: "This means so much to us, especially now. It's going to be a few years before you see us again."

He added: "People are fed up with us - and so are we."

Friends and sources are now claiming that Martin is putting the band on hold to spend more time with his wife Gwyneth Paltrow and their baby Apple. The couple are expecting another child in April.

The 28-year-old singer apparently later told Brits host Chris Evans: "You had a break, so are we."

Coldplay landed a record deal in 1999, and have recorded three award-winning LPs: Parachutes, A Rush of Blood to the Head and 2005's X & Y.

Not that bothered - I quite like some of their music, but wouldn't go mad for them. Anyway, it might be that they are just taking a break and will do something in a couple of years - although announcements like this generally do mean the end of the road.

Apparently (and apologies for repeating what I put on another thread) there was a very mixed reaction to them winning best album at The Brits. There was a lot of booing from people who didn't think they should have won, but it will probably be edited out of tonight's programme.

That's grim! If everyone liked the same stuff, it would be a borin old place. There's no need to Boo just because your own particular favourite didn't win. I think X & Y is an excellent album. Who were they up against in that category?

The nominees were:-

Coldplay - X & Y
Gorillaz - Demon Days
James Blunt - Back To Bedlam
Kaiser Chiefs - Employment
Kate Bush - Aerial

I agree with you Stropz - booing just because your personal favourite didn't win is pathetic, not to mention very rude!

Out of the above, I would say "Back to Bedlam" is a good album, but not spectacular. "Employment" is excellent and had a fair chance of winning. The other two are pretty dull.

If I had to choose the winner, it would have been close between Kaisers and Coldplay. I might have opted for Kaisers because it's their debut album, but Coldplay are worthy winners.

Aye, I would agree with that. Although the "greatest band" accolade for me has to go to Green Day.

I hope they don't split up, taking a break is fine but there really is no point in splitting up because in a few years they may want to get back together.

im quite surprised they were going to split after such a success from their new album. Splitting up for now is the last thing I thought they would do

I guess so. People will probably think there's a bit of publicity seeking involved in it all.

They have some good songs. It's Chris Martin's singing voice that let's them down for me.

It's just not that... good.

Apparently they have now denied that they are splitting up. Or to be more accurate, the record company have denied they are splitting up, which I think means that they will probably split before the end of the year.

I'd agree with that. He sounds a bit whiney to me. Just my opinion!
