Cheap Sets,Predictible story lines and bad acting, but why do soaps get such good ratings?
For me at the minute this whole corrie being made out to be the best show on TV is doing my head in, people make out it's like some life changing programme, then we have hollyoaks which needs to perhaps invest in better fire alarms? DISCUSS

because they stick in good looking people except a few of them that can actually act.

People have a kind of familiarity with them - they're always there and always trying to reflect real life. I guess the appeal is with people watching it to relax and forget about themselves for half an hour.
I just don't get the point. I only watch things with a concrete ending, or if a TV series, an interesting premise.

Making around 300 episode a year costs a large amount, compare that to say, Desperate Housewives, which makes 20 odd episodes a year) I think it's quite good how soaps keep going all year round, they provide that nightly drama

we are different then chewy as i like to talk about the highs and lows of a tv show before it ends, and i like having my opinion on the last ever episode of a tv show, where as with corrie thats just gonna last another 500 years.

Nothing in excess

Everybody kind of knows they're a load of crap, but watch them anyway.
If there is one thing Coronation Street is good at though, poor script and acting aside, it's comedy.

I haven't read anywhere or heard that Corrie is the best show ever. I've never heard that about any UK soap.
Corrie is getting all the attention these days because of it's longevity. 50 years in broadcasting is worth a mention surely? Quite a few fans tune in every week because they are familiar with the characters, some relate to both the characters and the plot lines, Some tune in through habit, some like it's a hobby. There's many reasons why people tune into these shows, I don't think many fans tune in for it's intellect.

Exactly, I don't think soaps should become intelligent dramas
The Bill did, and look where that is now |

I do believe that competition between soaps can be both healthy and damaging at the same time.
If I could change one thing about our soaps then I would opt for all to have their episode slashed. All this working their backsides off to deliver 3 hours of television is going to create some stories that feel rushed or not executed correctly. Less is more (definitely in this scenario IMHO)

the bill was always a drama though as it mixed in humour, police and soap elements, which imo that classes it as a drama.

I agree, I would get rid of two Corrie episodes and have it
Monday-Wednesday-Friday Emmerdale is definately overkill with six episodes a week, so I would axe three of those and place it with Corrie, with EE, I'd just get rid of one episode |

Yes, but it was always more soapy, then they did that big revamp where they changed the theme, added the filmic effect, added incidental music and moved from handheld camera to placed camera (which is the thing I hated, the Bill was about cops on the beat, chasing criminals daaaaaaaaaan, not stand still for half an hour, it's like making Poirot turn gay and have sex with the murderer, who then blows up the Orient Express, but WHO DIES!?

Yes, three episodes a week would definitely benefit the fans, all these episodes and double episodes really do feel like overkill.

Aye, especially with Corrie, it used to feel like a treat on Monday when we got two episodes

.........& I still think Corrie is on Wednesdays, no matter how many times I check on our planner, it's just one of the things that has never sunk in with me.
