Default Ahhhh!!

Right, for over a year now i've 100% wanted to join the army when i turned 16 but my parents and grandparents etc have all been against it. My mum and dad have both refused to sign the forms for me to join up when i'm 16 and if they don't then that means i will have to wait untill i am 18 which i DON'T want to do.

My mum, dad, 2 of my grandparents, aunties etc etc all want me to become an 'accountant' because yeah, i enjoy maths and i'm really good at it but i've basically told them to shove there accountant expectations for me up there bumhole as it's 100% not going to happen. Yeah, i'd be good at it and the money would be great but i couldn't do it, i couldn't handle a 9-5 job, the same boring $hite every day of the week. I want something exciting from life, there are soo many different things you can do with the Army, soo many experiences etc, soo much excitement.

I don't mean this is in a like 'i'm better way' butt i really couldn't do one of those jobs, i mean, when you wake up in the morning, what would you have to look forward to? The same as the day before and the day before that? FUN FUN FUN! Orrrr, you might even go out for a drink for an hour after work, too much excitement for one week eh?!

I really couldn't see myself doing it. I'm not even sure if i would even pass the medical as i've got quite bad asthma but the way it's going, i won't be able to even try untill i'm 18.

They all want me to get a job like that, but it's my life and my future so i will do what i want. They know that i will sign myself up at 18 anyway but are still dead set on not letting me go at 16.

As i said before, if i don't get in due to my asthma then they will think it's a godsend as i will have to get a typical 9-5 job. Yeahhhh right, i firstly want to go travelling and see some of the world and i would love to end up in somewhere like Spain, getting a job in a bar and basically enjoying my life, coming home every now and then and just basically living my life the way i want to.

Yeah, i want a lot from life etc but that's because i'm willing to work for it, i'm 100% gonna follow my dreams and do what i want to do. I know that if i don't do everything i want to do then i will get to the age of about 50 and regret it, regret not following my dreams basically.

Yeahhh, a typical office job is enough for other people (and again, i don't mean this in a 'i'm better way' cause i'm not) but it's not enough for me, it really isn't. Life is there to be lived so why not live it? And moree importantly, live it the way YOU want to. NOT the way your parents want you to because at the end of the day, who's life is it? There's or yours? I knew this post would turn into me chatting on and on lol.

Basically, i was having a rant about my parents and every other person trying to stop me from doing what i want to do (which will NEVER happy babayy) but also FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS!

All a bit 'serious' from me but hey, it's 4 in the morning, i've been thinking about life and getting really excited about doing the things i want to do.

Oh also, the point of this thread was to get advice lmao. Anyone else have similar problems, not neccaserilary about the army or even a job but about parents or other people trying to stop them from doing things because they want something different for you etc?

Andd can i have noo smart alec comments in here please, don't want any barstool taking the wee out of my hour long speech and i won't have to send you a nasty U2U.

Oooo have i really wrote all this without a single swear word? *records date & time* noww, end of speech me thinks and more importantly (the poor ba$tard reading this) veryyy much hopes.

This might sound wierd but if your parents dont agree to you going now then you could maybe wait to your 18 i know you dont want to wait that long but i do think that you might have to have a nice long chat with your mum and dad and remember they only want whats best for you!

If you're dead set on joining the army, then join the army. I think they're not keen for you to go because you'd only be 16, they're probably wanting you to get higher education. IDK, just go over what you've told us with them.

I can see this from both sides of the fence!

As a parent with the way the current situation is overseas I can understand why your parents would not want you to join the army - they would be so worried!

Mother bit over!

I can also understand why you would want to do something that will bring more to your life! that said the army still gives you a normal mundane job to do 9-5 a lot of the time other than when you are on exercise, or overseas training. My hubby was in the army for 10 years and yes he did a bit of travelling but he also did much of the same things day in day out, thats why he left!

It can seem exciting and if it is truly what you want to do then dont let to much stand in your way. Asthma would not necessarily rule you out of the army they would just do a much more thorough medical on you. Also your Asthma might limit what roles you are able to do in the army, you might end up at a desk job and that isnt what you want.

Why not have a good talk with someone at your local army careers about the future opportunities for you. If you dont live near an army careers office you can go to http://www.army.mod.uk/ this has a facility that will allow you to email an questions that you might have.

I hope that you can work this out with your parents but I do think that to go to them having looked at your options in great detail would show them how serious you are.

Yeah i can understand that they want the best for me etc etc BUT it all comes down to it being my life again and not theres.

And of course yeah, i know when your at your barracks it's a lot of the same but it's more exciting than what they want me to do.

Thanks for the info Sunny. ..and thanks to everyone else who's posted a reply.

Right, i've now found out i cannot join the army because of my asthma. You have to be 4 years free of using an inhaler and the way i'm going, i'm gonna be using an inhaler untill the day i die. So i'm absolutely guttered.

Buttt, i now want to be a Holiday Rep. Not all bad, ha.

What's it going to be tomorrow?

No seriously, it's a shame about your asthma preventing you from doing something you wanted to do.

Accountancy is well boring... I do it for A-levels. Just tell your parents that it's your decision, your life and they have to respect your choices. They may not be the right ones but they'll guide you along the way and you'll learn if you make mistakes.

Accounting has nothing to do with being good at maths btw. I got a B in my Maths mock for my A-level and got 16% in my Accounting.
