You should only be patriotic if you live in a great country. Obviously as an American I am very patriotic.

But if i lived in like Cuba, or North Korea, or Canada, i wouldn't be patriotic.

So, no, it isn't an oxymoron.

Plus not all of England behaves as the Daily Mail would have you believe, "Broken Britian" is a myth, there has always been areas of the country that have been downtrodden, they just don't want to remind you of that, as it lessens their impact.

I don't think patriotism is a bad thing, as long as it's not blind patriotism.

Yeah but you're patriotism is more or less blind from what I've seen, you will defend your country to the hilt regardless of the discussion.

Wrong. have no problem criticizing my country, I'm a liberal. But like someone else said in this thread. It's like when you complain about your own family, but if someone not in your family says something against your family, you defend them.

Just because you are critical and objective about your own kind, doesn't mean you'll tolerate attacks from outside.

I love Michael Moore, but if Michael Moore was not American, i wouldn't, if he was canadian or british, i'd be like, don't you have enuf problems in yur own country?? who are YOU to focus on OUR problems, when you have so many problems of your own.

Canada is not great. It's a mini-america, and everything it is is just a second-rate imitation of America.

Like the healthcare system?

When I was there I found it a very warm, friendly place. It seems to contain most of America's best elements without most of the worst.

Of course I'm judging on strength of character, gun control, general state of culture, cleanliness and functionality of cities and transport that sort of thing.

Not 'they need to rely on us nyah!' type judgements.

I have always fancied going to Canada actually. Everybody I know that's been there says it's fantastic... miles better than the USA in fact!

Canada's healthcare syustem has plenty of problems of their own. And the cancer survival rates are higher int he US than in Canada. There wwas a case recently that outraged canadians of even Canadian Politicians coming to the US to get surgeries.

SO if Canadian elites trust the US healthcare more than Canadian, what does that tell you?

I never said there weren't plenty of fantastic things about Canada. I"m just saying Canada is "great". "Great" mean's it's special, it's something to talk about,. something amazing.

There's nothing AMAZING about Canada. Anything you can find in Canada you can find done bigger and better in the USA.

Then why do all the best of Canada move to the USA?

Even though Canada is only 1/10th the population of the US, there are more Canadians trying to move to the USA, than American's trying to move to Canada.

So obviously Canadians disagree with you.

Lol.. I'm just pulling your string!!

I've never been to the States or Canada and would like to visit both equally.

My brother in law and cousin in law are both American and have said that America is a fantastic place to visit.

My cousins are in LA and keep on at us to go and visit, but I can't really be arsed with the long flight when my kids are so young. May do it in a few years

It is a nightmare of a flight. I can't even bear the 4 hour flights to the east coast, so i can't imagine all the way from Europe.

I hate flying.

Oh I love flying.. if you get peace to have a few drinks, get a blanket and get stuck into a good book. This sort of thing just doesn't happen though when you have a 6 and a 4 year old in tow!

Can you actually give me examples of things in Canada being done bigger and better in America? It's a bit of a blanket argument that's useless on it's own. In my experience I found Canadians more pleasant, levelheaded and knowledgable than their Ameircan counterparts. That's what I'm judging things on from my perspective. Not which country has the largest shopping mall.

Try 14 hours in an Air France 747 where the movie is in French and about 7 miles away at the front of the cabin. Then they're gonna land you at Charles De Gaulle @ 4am where it's -6C and all your warm clothes are in the suitcase for onwards flight.

Americans are such wimps!

No worries. I'll give plenty of examples...

Science, Technology, Medicine, Education, Art, Film, Music, Military, Literature, Agriculture....

Need i go on?

And on an interesting side-note to your statement, i believe that actually Canada has a larger shopping mall than any in America, so they did get us on ONE thing. LOL.
