Default Vanilla's Metro interview - 25th January, 2011

Vanilla Ice: Dancing On Ice is tough but rewarding

Why did you decide to do the show?

I didn’t want to do it at first – I’ve never been on the ice before, I’m from Florida and skating isn’t big there but I’ve got daughters who love to skate and they told me I had to do it. It’s tough but that’s what makes it rewarding.

You’re one of the favourites to win apparently…

I don’t look at it as a competition. I just take it day by day. They want me to say all this stuff to the camera about how I want to win but I don’t because it isn’t real. All I can do is give it my best. Some of the other celebrities are stressing out about going home but what’s the big deal? They’re not skaters so if they’re not good enough they’re not good enough. I’m just having fun.

Had you heard of any of the other contestants?

No, apart from Jeff Brazier – I did The Farm with him. I hadn’t heard of anyone else. When you put this many people together you think there’s got to be an asshole here or there but everyone is really nice and I get on well with everybody.

Haven’t you got your own DIY show?

It’s more a property development show called The Vanilla Ice Project. It’s the highest-rated show on the DIY Network in the US. I’ve been making great investments on property for 15 years and it follows me going around buying houses, doing them up, doing construction. I do a lot of TV stuff but I also turn a lot down – it’s got to be an adventure.

What are your property investment tips?

You can buy property for below the appraised value right now and there are lots of repossessions. Location is still the main thing to look for. I’m currently redeveloping a 7,000sq ft mansion. I’ve put a home theatre in the attic, a 140in high-definition screen, LEDs everywhere, an infinity pool and a garage with a big plasma screen. I love all that hi-tech stuff.

Are you bothered your TV career has overshadowed your music career?

You might think that but I’ve sold 3million records in the past eight months and I’ve got a new record out next month called WTF, which stands for Wisdom, Tenacity and Focus. At least if I say that we can sell it in Walmart. I get in where I fit in. I’ve never left music behind but I’ve had success in television. It’s a lot of work but it’s fun. Even things like working with Jedward – that was enjoyable. Yesterday’s history, tomorrow’s a mystery.

What’s the worst gig you’ve ever done?

One in Japan. There was this girl in the front row, naked but wearing a trench coat, and she kept flashing me, then a circuit breaker blew up and the electricity went wrong. It was very stressful.

What’s your pet kangaroo called?

Bucky Buckaroo. He’s a great guy. I’ve had him since he was a baby and now he’s 5ft 10in. He’s spoiled rotten – he has his own enclosure and a female pot-bellied pig in there who is his lover. Kangaroos will hump anything. I think the pig likes it. There’s also a goat in there who he grew up with but they’re just friends.

What’s been your most extravagant purchase?

I’ve bought yachts, mansions, cars – I have an exotic car rental business in Palm Beach and I’ve just bought a Rolls-Royce Phantom. It’s great, you can get such good deals on cars now.

Have you ever had a supernatural experience?

About 18 years ago I had a weekend that lasted a few days. I did the rock star thing. I was freaking out, I don’t know what my friend gave me but I piled 15 pool loungers on top of each other and jumped off them into a swimming pool. I turned around and was convinced I saw the Loch Ness Monster behind me. That was the end of that whole rock star thing.
