Ive heard about chavs many times, but Its not very clear what it is to me just yet.
First I thought a chav was a social climber who is tacky, because I hear all the time people saying that Katie Price and Wayne Royne are chavs. But its certainly not just only that, since i hear people describing many working class people as chavs. I also have the impression that chav is the adjective that people often use to describe a delinquent. Its also often used to describe people that like wearing those hideous Burberry head to toe outfits, and Lacoste outfits as well. As you could notice Im very confused about it. So.... 1st question: What is ( in few words ) a chav? 2nd question: Are chavs, scallies and hoodies all the same thing? Thanks in advance |

I believe all are intended to describe someone who wears that style of clothing, is probably unemployed, and more than likely a delinquent yes. (Obviously a hoodie being someone with a hooded jacket )

Just a name for people who dress a certain why. Just like mods or punks or emo's or goths (etc). Chavs are typically in tracksuits, lots of 'loud' jewellery, makeup, gelled hair....
They get a bad reputation as they tend to hang around in gangs. Can't see that most are any worse than anyone else Not a fan, not my scene, but generally thats how I see it |

If you ask a goth to describe himself, he's probably gonna say he's goth among other things. It's very unlikely that the same would happen with a chav. Its almost as if, chavs dont want to be part of a group, but society sees them as being part of that group. Anyway, your explanation was indeed helpful, thanks. |

Chav is from the Romany word "Chavi" for child (more specifically boy) recorded from as early as the mid 19th century, and was also used by gypsies as a derogatory term towards an adult. The acronym CHAV "Council House And Violent" or "Cheltenham Average" has been coined relatively recently and was first applied to stereotype your average street corner hoodie, but is now used in a wider sense to stereotype a certain class of people the Americans would call "white trash".
The term "Pikey" is also derived from the Kentish dialect word for gypsy, in turn derived from "turnpike" meaning one who travels the roads. The term "scally" is thought to originate from the word "scallywag" meaning a rascal or villain, and is usually applied to those believed to be involved in criminal activity of some sort.
