All the Tomb Raiders up to 5. After 5 they suck. And blow. Adored the original Tomb Raiders and still have a little go sometimes for old time's sake.

Abe's Oddworld. Never enjoyed the platform games Abe's Odyssey and Abe's Exoddus, but when Oddworld came out on PS3, it was bloody brilliant.

Primal. Jen enters four different world to fight monsters with her sidekick, Scree, who's a gargoyle. Sounds lame, but it's actually good fun and one of those games that makes you jump sometimes. Bit of thrash metal on the old soundtrack too... always good when you're slaughering demons, I find.

Spoiler:

Streets Of Rage

Seminal beat em' up with great cannon fodder, colourful levels and a pumping soundtrack. I've lost count of the amount of times I've played it and it's sequels. The first series I was obsessed with.

Revenge Of Shinobi

The best side scrolling action platform ever created. It was so absurdly difficult as a kid that passing the levels felt so rewarding. I couldn't wait to see what the next stage would look like. Again great cannon fodder, colourful levels and a slightly less pumping soundtrack.

Wipeout

Done for video gaming what Trainspotting did to convince a generation of club goers that cinema was the hippest thing going. The first game isin't even that great gameplay wise but the aesthetic - largely created by Designers Republic - was nothing short of amazing. Especially in 1996. Slots right in with the rest of the decade.

Crash Bandicoot 2 : Cortex Strikes Back

I'm not a platformer man. This might be the only one to make the list. But it's an intoxicating mix of humour and fun, often tricky, gameplay in highly thematic zones with wicked boss battles. This done for me what Mario 64 done for most people.

Tomb Raider II

Clearly the best Tomb Raider game ever made. Can be difficult but not nauseatingly so like previous games. Venice was a joy to play through. I just love how that entire level works and it's got such a heavy atmosphere to it. The ship levels are haunting. The traps scared me senseless as a kid. And the butler will always find a way to catch up with you doing that creepy moaning sound that still reverberates in my head.

Doom

The game that sent FPS gaming into the stratosphere has yet to be bettered. It still has bucketloads more charisma than any Halo or Call Of Duty that will ever get released. It's always playable again and again even to this day.

Half-Life

Thank god it ran on my aunt's Windows 95 desktop. Everyone who played Half-Life had never seen anything close before. It's not the shooting. It's the little nuances. Scientists who talk to you, health charging stations, killing the security guard so you can get his ammo clips, the G-Man. Everything was pulled off with an eerie cinematic sheen that was way ahead of it's time. And not a cutscene in sight. The sequel sucks balls.

Final Fantasy VII

If you were a part of the generation of kids who rushed home from school to play Final Fantasy VII for hours on end chances are it was the first RPG you have ever played and chances are you still think it's the best game ever. Pure perfection. No other game's made me feel as much. IX is almost as good. VIII is almost as good as IX. This one is the king of the trio.

Metal Gear Solid

Like Half-Life nobody had ever played anything like this. There is simply not enough superlatives to describe how jaw dropping this game is. You like to play Castlevania?

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3

It was actually the vastly inferior but amazing at the time PS1 port of this game that first introduced me to the insane world of taking classic platform gaming and point scoring and putting it on a skateboard. It was dangerously addictive and you were really literally just grinding in circles around the same tiny levels again and again.

TimeSplitters

This relatively low key, vastly underappreciated first entry to the generally unnoticed-but-now-finally-being-lauded series hooked me into 21st century FPS gaming when most people were busy wanking over Halo. Fast, frenetic and - gosh - funny and with more than two colours. I'm looking at you Cal Of Duty.

Halo

I did eventually get around to wanking off to Halo though. I believe it was after crash landing on Halo and looking up and the sky and then down at the grass. Woah.

Grand Theft Auto III

Finally playing the Xbox port in the run up to San Andreas's release this was a series I arrived late to. San Andreas is still the best of the lot and takes you on an amazing journey but this is the one that started it for me. I still love it's simple three island, no nonsense gameplay. Portland is still the best map and it's still better than Vice City.

The Elder Scrolls IV : Oblivion

An absurdly beautiful game that sucks you in and slowly replaces all your real life friends with cat people, racist dark elves and orcs. The only game that comes close to touching Final Fantasy's VII-IX in terms of keeping me up all night and making me feel. Stop right there, criminal scum!
