Default Employee fired for taking two hot dogs

A former worker at a department store has won a court battle after it was ruled his firing was "unjustified".

Nolan Koewler was sacked a year ago from the Dillard's store in Evansville, Indiana for eating two hot dogs without permission.

The incident happened on July 4, 2010, when Dillard's held a company picnic. Leftover hot dogs were kept in a freezer to be saved for Labor Day on September 6, the AP reports.

Koewler was then caught taking the hot dogs out of the freezer, leading to his dismissal.

The Indiana Court of Appeals resolved the matter earlier this week and ordered the store to pay him unemployment benefits.

Koewler claimed that he wasn't aware that he wasn't allowed to eat the hot dogs. The court came to the decision unanimously.

For what they were it seems a great fuss over nothing. Here in the UK though apparantly in the catering trade, even food or sandwiches that are going to be thrown in the bin at the ned of the day, cannot be taken by staff.

Seeme daft to me but I guess there's some reason for it.

The reasoning for that is that it discourages certain employees to hide stock until it had to be thrown out and then taking it home. It's theft. Two hot dogs seems petty but it would be like me coming into your house and taking your milk.

That makes sense, I knew it was considered theft but couldn't grasp the reason for that, Your explanation of it discouraging hiding stock until the end of day to benefit from that makes sense and is understandable. Thank you.

Ok, let me rephrase that. It would be like me taking milk left outside your house by a milkman. It's not mine to take, just like that stock is not the employees to take.
