The Commons, incredibly, may have done something in a timely way to change the course of events. How can Jeremy Hunt wave through the BSkyB deal now? How can he face the Commons after that lot yesterday, and say he has no power to stop the Murdoch takeover?

Backbenchers rose to the occasion from all sides of the House. Between them they established a central, organising fact: Rupert Murdoch's News International – its directors, editors and contractors – are not, in Frank Dobson's phrase, "fit and proper persons to run a minicab company let alone the largest media organisation in Britain".

Tom Watson, in a magnificently understated J'accuse, listed the charges against the company and concluded that James Murdoch, the chairman and chief executive of News Corporation in Europe and Asia, be suspended for his plan to cover up, pay off and silence victims with a gagging contract.

From everything said, News International is in breach of all the 10 Commandments, Magna Carta, the Bill of Rights, the Broadcasting Code and very possibly Newton's Laws of Motion. It and its management is, on its own evidence, guilty of lying, cheating, thieving, bribing, corrupting, suborning and going around with a hairstyle like a hat made of vipers.

The immediate quarry is the deal for News Corp to buy all of BSkyB. Nicholas Soames threw his weight into the scales by saying the evidence of "clear criminality" that had recently emerged surely meant "a pause" was in order. He also squashed Labour attempts to claim the moral high ground by pointing out that the rot had been around for years. So many of them on and around the front benches are in hock to News International with jobs, columns, consultancies, influence.

As for Murdoch? Who knows what the old crocodile feels, if "feels" is the right word.

Rupert Murdoch is expected to arrive in London later to take charge of dealing with the phone-hacking crisis that has engulfed his News International group.

This comes as News of the World staff prepare its final edition, following the announcement of its closure.

Time to vastly decrease his involvement with important organisations not increase it.

Ofcom, the media regulator, is to consider whether News Corporation would make a "fit and proper" owner of satellite broadcaster BSkyB.

In a statement, Ofcom's chief executive Ed Richards, emphasised that he would not act while the police and courts carried out their work.

But he has written to the authorities asking to be "kept abreast" of information that would help Ofcom.

It follows allegations of illegal activities at the News of World.

On Friday, former NoW editor Andy Coulson was arrested by police investigating hacking allegations.

News Corp, owner of the NoW, wants to buy the 60.1% of BSkyB that it does not already own.

Ofcom is required to ensure that any company - and its directors - holding a broadcast licence are "fit and proper" to do so.

In a letter to John Whittingdale MP, chairman of the Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee, Mr Richards said: "We are monitoring the situation closely and in particular the investigations by the relevant authorities into alleged unlawful activities."

He said that Ofcom would not do anything at this moment in time to prejudice investigations by the police.

However, "we are writing to the relevant authorities to highlight our duties in relation to Fit and Proper" and would like to know of "any further information which may assist us in the discharge of our own duties".

Mr Richards added that Ofcom is "very conscious of the level of concern about these matters in Parliament and in the country more widely".

Labour leader Ed Miliband says he will force a Commons vote to delay News Corporation's proposed takeover of BSkyB, until the investigation into the News of the World is completed.

The last edition of the newpaper has been published, with a full-page apology for hacking mobile phones.

News Corporation owner Rupert Murdoch is due in London to take charge of the handling of the scandal.

Mr Miliband urged him to take action and sack executive Rebekah Brooks.

Mrs Brooks - a former News of the World editor and now chief executive of News International - has been under pressure over staying in her role while journalists on the paper have lost their jobs.

Mr Miliband denied he had "declared war on Rupert Murdoch" but also called on him to abandon the BSkyB bid.

Hopefully he won't get the full control of BSkyB after this as it seems there is still a lot more to come out on the scandal anyway.

It will be interesting to see if any politician has any meetings,social or otherwise, with Murdoch when he arrives today to supposedly help sort this mess out.

Don't forget one important fact. The Tories are in power. The lib dems are jackass puppets of Cameron. So yes he will get Sky. A little later maybe but he will get it.

The Tories won't miss out on having their own personal Tory propagand merchant to serve them....

It's a tricky one but it seems that if a vote is taken in the Commons this wek the Lib Dems are likely to vote to halt the deal until investigations are over, there are many Tory MPs too,to be fair who are appalled with this scandal.

Cameron has a tricky act to play here but I do believe he will want to be seen to be on the British publics side on this one and not Rupert Murdoch's and if Murdoch goes ahead, in spite of the Commons vote, in spite of the many more revelations still to be made known as to this scandal and then takes the UK Govt to court, let him.

The more this scandal is kept in the public domain the better, people need to know what a rotten man Murdoch is and also how rotten his empires become too.

The deputy prime minister has urged News Corp chairman and chief executive, Rupert Murdoch, to "do the decent thing" and reconsider his bid for BSkyB following the News of the World phone-hacking scandal.

Nick Clegg made the comments after meeting the family of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler whose phone was allegedly hacked.

Her parents Bob and Sally Dowler and her sister Gemma told him the deleting of messages on her phone had given them hope she was alive and discussed their hopes for the forthcoming public inquiries.

Mr Clegg said "we owe it to the Dowlers and other innocent victims of hacking to get these inquiries right".

The Culture Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, has referred News Corporation's bid for BSkyB to the Competition Commission.

The move follows News Corp's withdrawal of its proposed undertaking to spin off Sky News as part of its attempt to take over the broadcaster.

The spin-off of Sky News had initially been the key condition if News Corp was to be allowed to take over BSkyB.

But in light of the phone-hacking scandal, Mr Hunt had said he was seeking fresh advice from regulators.

"I am going to refer this [bid] to the Competition Commission with immediate effect and will be writing to them this afternoon," Mr Hunt told the House of Commons.

"Today's announcement will be an outcome that I'm sure the whole house will welcome.

"It will mean that the Competition Commission will be able to give further full and exhaustive consideration to this merger, taking into account all relevant recent developments."

Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation has announced that it is dropping its planned bid to take full ownership of BSkyB.

The announcement came as the House of Commons was preparing to vote for a motion calling on Mr Murdoch to do so.

All three major party leaders had said they supported the motion, which would not be legally binding on News Corp.

The decision follows days of allegations about phone hacking by News Corp subsidiary News International.

"We believed that the proposed acquisition of BSkyB by News Corporation would benefit both companies, but it has become clear that it is too difficult to progress in this climate," said News Corp deputy chairman and president Chase Carey in a statement.

"News Corporation remains a committed long-term shareholder in BSkyB. We are proud of the success it has achieved and our contribution to it."

The BBC's business editor Robert Peston said: "It's a huge humiliation. This was [News Corp's] biggest investment plan of the moment. It was one of the biggest investments they've ever wanted to make.

"It is an extraordinary reversal of corporate fortune... And questions will now be asked whether this is the full extent of the damage to the empire."
