A Bond girl actress who had suffered from bowel cancer ended her life by drinking drain cleaner, Westminster Coroner's Court has heard.

Angela Scoular, 65, who starred in On Her Majesty's Secret Service, died in April.

The actress, who lived in Maida Vale, west London, was battling alcoholism and depression and worried about debts.

Coroner Dr Fiona Wilcox recorded a verdict of "killing herself while the balance of her mind was disturbed".

Ms Scoular's death was not suicide, the coroner ruled.

The court heard Ms Scoular suffered non-survivable 40% burns to her throat, body and dietary tract.

The cause of death was ingestion of a corrosive substance and multiple fractures, said Dr Wilcox.

The coroner heard the actress died two hours after drinking the liquid containing 90% sulphuric acid.

She also poured the corrosive liquid on her body.

The inquest heard the actress was diagnosed with cancer in 2008 and was given the all clear after treatment and surgery, but months before her death she began to fear the return of the disease.

The actress, who had battled alcoholism for years, used to drink between 150 and 210 units of alcohol a week.

The actress landed the role of Buttercup in the 1966 Bond spoof Casino Royale and was Ruby Bartlett in On Her Majesty's Secret Service in 1969.

She acted in films, television and theatre during her career, including playing the role of Cathy in a BBC adaptation of Wuthering Heights in 1967.

The actress had married Carry On star Leslie Phillips in 1982.

The actor, aged 87, was too ill to attend court, said in a read statement their life together was happy.

Her other film credits include A Countess from Hong Kong, Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush, Doctor in Trouble, Adventures of a Private Eye and Adventures of a Taxi Driver

Her television credits included Doctor in the House, The Avengers, Coronation Street, Penmarric, As Time Goes By and You Rang, M'Lord? in the recurring role of Lady Agatha Shawcross.

Coroner Dr Fiona Wilcox ruled she committed suicide while the balance of her mind was disturbed. Heartbroken Mr Phillips, 87, who starred in the Carry On films, did not attend the inquest today at Westminster magistrates' court.

In a statement read to the court he said he was in his sitting room on April 11 when he heard a scream and looked out of the window. "Angela was at the bottom of the stairs lying prostrate," he said. "She was generally in a shocking state."

His wife was covered in blood and acid and he and a neighbour doused her with water and towels as she lay making inaudible noises.

The neighbour, Mahmood Asmar, first found Ms Scoular after hearing her crying for help. Ms Scoular had drunk the industrial strength drain cleaner, which she found in the kitchen cupboard, before running from her house, pouring it over herself and falling down the steps.

She was rushed to hospital but died from burns to 40 per cent of her body, fractures as a result of her fall and damage to her lungs and oesophagus from drinking the acid.

I don't think somebodies death should be just labelled suicide if they were clearly mentally disturbed at the time as she was. Thats a simple label and doesnt do the truth justice.

some make a logical choice that they just don't want to live. Like those who have it done legally in Switzerland.

This womans actions were clearly disturbed and desperate.

Eeek, you have to be in a pretty damn disturbed state to do something like that. If she wanted to commit suicide it would make more sense to shoot herself or jump off a building so she wouldn't feel pain. But damn, to suffer for 2 hours with your insides burning from acid is horrendous....

Its a choice to end ones own life. Another reason why labels are wrong.

This woman may well have chose euthanasia given the option.
