Coronation Street bosses have been forced to alter filming schedules after Chris Gascoyne was sent home sick, a report has revealed.

The actor, who plays bookmaker Peter Barlow, was signed off by the show's doctor last Wednesday shortly after he arrived for work, according to The Sun.

It is thought that Gascoyne's absence has led to some disruption as Peter is to play a significant role on screen in the coming weeks when he supports Carla Connor through her forthcoming rape storyline, which is currently the biggest plot being filmed by the soap.

A show source told the newspaper: "It means all the schedules must be changed. Other actors due to film with him will have their shifts rearranged.

"Obviously it can't be helped and everyone wants Chris to get better but it's a worry when someone is signed off for a week and nobody is sure when they will be back."

A Coronation Street spokesperson confirmed: "Chris has been signed off for a week."

Carla's (Alison King) dark storyline is expected to begin in September and continue airing across the autumn.
