Channel 4 has snapped up the rights to 2 Broke Girls, the new US comedy from Sex and the City writer Michael Patrick King and one of the most hotly tipped shows to come out of this year’s LA Screenings.

Set in New York City, it follows two young waitresses: Max, who comes from a working-class family, and Caroline, who was born rich but has since fallen from grace. They soon become friends and set out to raise $25,000 to open their own cupcake store.

The series was created by Michael Patrick King, who wrote all the season premieres and finales for Sex & The City, and comedian Whitney Cummings for Warner Bros Television.

C4 head of acquisitions Gill Hay described the comedy as “effortlessly funny” and “warm-hearted”.

Jeffrey Schlesinger, president of Warner Bros International Television, said: “2 Broke Girls has the perfect combination of heart to laughs and we believe it will perform very well in the UK.

“Channel 4 has a history of making successful US comedies household names in the UK which makes them the perfect home for this show, which we think will be our next big hit sitcom.”

The broadcaster is yet to decide which channel the series will be shown on.

US network CBS will launch the comedy in September in an 8.30pm slot, scheduled between hit shows How I Met Your Mother and Two and a Half Men.

Kat Dennings (Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist, Thor) stars as Max while newcomer Beth Behrs will play Caroline alongside Matthew Moy (Scrubs), Jonathan Kite (I’m in the Band) and Garrett Morris (Saturday Night Live).

The series is produced by Bonanza Productions Inc in association with Warner Bros. Television.
