Default Should people who have had psychiatric treatment.....

...either recently, are undergoing treatment currently or who have clear mental health issues ... be regarded as stable personalities and be regarded as valued 'balanced opinion' posters?

Often I read comments made on either Tibb or other forums - from those who clearly offer their current ongoing or past MH issues and their posts show quite clear signs of their issues still being very obvious, being taken as serious?

Should such posts be disregarded, should they be viewed as not being balanced, normal state of the mind posts - should they be taken with a pinch of salt, should they be debated with - knowing that a sane, rational, mentally healthy balanced point of view may not be what is being offered up in the first instance.

It completely depends: how long ago they had treatment, how successful it was, what they were treated for, etc. For example, someone who suffered depression two years and has completely recovered should be regarded as having a stable personality - they aren't insane.

Hi Pyramid.
Yes, I believe people with Mental health issues should be able to post, they still have a view.Actually some people I have come across who are considered to have big mental problems talk more sense than most others.

If they were badly mentally impaired, they wouldn't likely do so anyway.

Being declared sane does not equate to well balanced.

Although I know someone who suffered paranoia-schizophrenia and will be on pills for a long time, and has been out of hospital for almost three years. If they were to miss tablets, the symptons would return and they would become mentally ill again.

I didn't say that. I know because I know someone who has suffered a mental illness.

Thanks for the input Joey - I actually agree to a great extent. Some are very more aware than others.

The reasons you have put forth are precisely the reason why I worded my opening post as I did.

By way of full explanation Firewire: the person you refer to, is (and will) be regarded as suffering from a mental illness. They suffer from one, but one that is able to be treated, that means they are not cured.

They still are mentally ill. The symptoms and the illness are being treated but the illness still remain.

It is a valid point you have raised. To what extent is their illness treated - to what extent is their paranoia reduced. A little, much, or completely? does it still have an effect on their day to day life?

No everyones posts should be considered equal even if they have a 'mental illness'. I have had something classed as a mental illness and was posting on TIBB and I have never had an infraction. Plus Pyramid you thought I was fine at the time and 'liked' me then. So possibly you are judging people on their labels too much rather than their actual selves.

An illness doesn't necessarily mean they will spam/show their issues through posts or have unbalanced views.
A mental illness doesn't always affect all parts of someones life and they should be regarded as the same as everyone else.

But if a member was obviously posting in a non constructive way that broke the rules they shouldn't be given special treatment or unfair treatment. They should be taken on a case by case basis like everyone else.

I am classed as having a mental illness. I suffer from severe depression and panic attacks.

I do not think this makes my posts any less valid, or that any of my posts should be disregarded, and am actually quite offended by this thread in all honesty.

I don't really think this thread is appropriate, wether the op states they are not referring to any member in particular or not, members who have MH issues and have discussed them on here in the past are obviously going to feel singled out and/or offended by this thread.
