Default Big Brother betting will top £5m, says William Hill

The return of Celebrity Big Brother is expected to bring in more than £5m worth of bets, according to William Hill.

Along with fans of the reality series, the bookmaker is eagerly awaiting the show's relaunch on Channel 5 later tonight.

"Big Brother was the first ever reality show on which we started betting and so we owe a lot to it," a William Hill spokesman said. "We expect over £5 million, industry-wide, to be staked over the course of the three weeks or so, which harks back to the turnover of the show when it was in its prime."

Betting will open when the first celebrity housemate enters the Elstree compound during tonight's live launch show. Odds of 8/11 are currently being offered that over 4 million fans will tune into Channel 5 for its return.

Current odds place heavily rumoured housemate Amy Childs as the favourite to win Celebrity Big Brother. The Only Way Is Essex star is currently 7/1 favourite, ahead of Jedward at 4/1, Kerry Katona at 10/1 and Sally Bercow at 16/1.

The spokesperson continued: "Big Brother set the ball rolling for reality TV betting which now represents a multi-million pound turnover within our industry.

"Last year we took a million pounds on CBB and we are expecting the new format of the show to reinvigorate interest, helping to beat (if not double) last year's total turnover."

Celebrity Big Brother launches tonight at 9pm on Channel 5.
