Sometimes you can almost hear the gears creaking and grinding as some awful contrivance is used to further the plot in your favourite soaps.

Occasionally though, the results are laugh-out-loud funny, like in this recent clip from Neighbours, when the characters need a way to discover Tasha's Serbian heritage based on a surname.

"Milan Jovanović," the chap says knowledgeably. "He's one of the greatest soccer players in the world and he's Serbian."

Sure, Milan is a full Serbian international. And before a period out of favour at Liverpool last season he had a fine spell at Standard Liège culminating in a couple of league titles and player of the year gong.

But even his biggest fan would admit that "one of the greatest soccer players in the world" might be pushing it.

As Wikipedia soberly notes: "It is generally accepted that Jovanović's achievements are not enough to afford him this status."
