Ok. Like what is foundation level like in the UK? In Ireland u can only take foundation in English, Irish and Maths .. And it is very rare for someone to do it.

With foundation can't you only get up to a B or something???
GCSES are getting so damn easy these days - I reckon I should take all of mine again!! I mean, someone on one of the threads the other day said you only need 18/100 for maths GCSE to get a grade C... that's ridiculous!!! You needed more than that in our year!!! No wonder so many kids get A's!!!

I disagree...it has gotten easier in core subjects such as math. My sister did hers last year and did fantastically with all A*....although she is fantastically clever, they had it a little easier. (I'm not saying that GCSEs are easy just easier).

And it was someone talking GCSEs on this forum that said 18/100 was a C!!!! That's why I was shocked!!!! And I don't think that was even a higher paper whereby you have to answer less right for each grade as the questions on the paper overall are harder.

I'm not being funny but anyone can see that kids are not getting cleverer!!!! I'm not taking away the success for you all as GCSEs themselves are alot of pressure, especially when you are doing 13 subjects as I did. It is too much really. Its just that life is easier - my cousin now has the option of doing her math a year early despite intelligence tests (we could do stats if we were clever) and they do it by learning a topic, taking the exam, learning the next topic, taking the exam - how the hell does that show that you can learn a whole curriculum of maths and retain it????

Junior Cert (Irish equivalent of GCSE's) 2004:

We can only get A, B, C etc... no stars and all that jazz!

The Irish system is much harder. To get into a University u need around 300 points or more in your Leaving Cert. Usually u take 7 subjects so u would have to get at least six Ds and 1 C at honours level to get you in. But the points go up or down due to the demand of the subject,. Like Medicine is like 560 points so u would nearly need straight A1s to get into that.

To be fair though English people need straight A's for medicine too but in 3 A levels, at least one science or two at the top institutions.... so I'm guessing the work u do for 3 A levels equals the work for the 7 subjects.

My friend is from Northern Ireland so they do A levels still. She still said the Irish schooling is better than English

I find the English method very confusing in Ireland u need to pass English and Maths to pass the leaving cert and then courses are worked on a points system . A A1 is 100 points, A2 is 90, B1 is 80 and so on.. It much easier.

Just to clarify, Booty-Full, I think I might've been the person that originally said 18/100 gained you a pass. What I meant, was that this was an extremely rare case in one exam with a minor exam board, and it was published for it's easiness in the news as a result of this.

Plus, I don't want to start an argument, and I'm not disregarding your comment or views, but I wholeheartedly disagree with anybody who claims exams are getting easier: rather schools are becoming more grade-orientated, putting added pressure on the students who in turn work immensly hard in order to get the results they deserve! I mean, take me as an example: I've had 17 exams over the last 15 school days, on average two hours each day! How stressful is that?

The rise in grades needn't be as a result of exams getting easier either, as we could have better education systems than in years gone by, and with students putting in a lot more work, and arguably seeing the exams as a more all-or-nothing situation.

I know that your point was made curtiously, and I respect that, yet it often annoys me how the conclusion is made that "Oh, better results, easier exams!" With first-hand experience, it often feels quite demoralising to have groups of people expressing an opinion on something they don't know everything about, effectively devaluing the constant hard work and effort that we've put in to make ourselves proud over the last two years. I hope you do not take this post personally, as this was not the way in which it was meant, rather to adress the wider "conception" that we teenagers get away with murder in our exams, when we honestly don't! We're just eager to justify what we've been doing in two years worth of lessons!

I don't think that they're getting easier, maybe the actual paper is easier but these days there is so much 'stuff' to distract you from work - e.g. TV, Computer, games, social life, oh and BB! - it basically levels it out because you have to be sensible enough to not let yourself get too distracted by those factors, so I think its very unfair when people try and say your qualifications are easy to obtain when people work so hard to obtain them.

For my maths I had to get an average of 45% in 2 papers to get a C, co it can't have been 18/100.

Talking of work and stuf, I went to Exeter Uni toady for an open day, it was well cool cos I met all my friends from my old school which was cool. When I met them they all said they were going to the Plymouth uni open day tommorrow so Im off there now instead of going to school - fun fun fun

I respect your opinion however mine has not really changed as I know that some people are getting higher grades that would not have got them before!

I did 13 GCSEs so I know the stress and strain well - I had a hell of a lot of exams. So I am not taking away the achievement. It is not the student's fault - it is the school system. Unfortunately from my experience at university, in the work place and in society in general I cannot see a rise in articulate and intelligent people. Instead it seems to be going the other way - crazy. People are leaving school passing English and Maths GCSEs and then going to agencies to get a job and miserably failing maths and english tests! I know plenty of people that cannot spell simple words (that are on an eight year old's reading list)....I am not saying that exams have suddenly gotten easy and do believe that it is unfair on the students to say it........but the criteria for a pass should be tougher. Basic grammar and spelling are a must!!!!

You're right, it's 18/100 for several exam boards and I found that so shocking but I'm not complaining because I got an A!

Well then they are smaller boards. Because the bigger boards such as OCR require around 45% + to get a C.
