A naked man has been arrested in southern California after stealing a car at gunpoint.

The criminal was captured by a police dog after abandoning the vehicle following a late-night police chase in Whittier.

He had earlier stolen the Hummer from a limousine driver at gunpoint, according to The Independent.

In footage captured from a helicopter, the man is seen running from the car wearing no clothes and holding up his hands.

He runs around the street for a few seconds before the police dog catches up to him, slowing him down to allow officers to restrain and arrest him.

Smoke was billowing from the Hummer's tyres shortly before he fled the vehicle.

The unidentified man was the only person in the car and it remains unclear why he was naked at his time of arrest.
