A New Zealand woman was shocked to discover a baby seal curled up asleep on her sofa earlier this week.

Annette Swoffer discovered the pup mingling with her pet cats and dog on Sunday (December 11), having apparently wandered out from the Bay Of Plenty waterfront on North Island.

The young seal is believed to have ventured through a residential area, across busy roads, under a gate and through the cat flap of Swoffer's home.

Recalling her discovery, Swoffer told The New Zealand Herald: "I thought, 'I'm hallucinating, this is just wrong'. I'm looking and I'm definitely seeing flippers and not paws. Then it looks at me with those huge brown eyes. It was so cute."

Swoffer notified the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and apparently had to convince them that the encounter was genuine.

"They were giggling away and I'm saying 'I'm not drunk, I'm not lying'," she said. "'There's a seal in my house.'"

The SPCA then contacted the Department of Conservation, who were already looking for the pup.

When a worker came to retrieve the seal, it reportedly escaped and made its way up to the front of the vehicle, accidentally turning on the radio and ending up on the front seat.
