Seriously, a lot of people completely zone out when it comes to RE...taking time to learn about beliefs, traditions, cultures is more valid to society and understanding than some curriculum subjects imo.......huge respect to you

Cheers Ammi, I did find it all interesting at the time, used to watch hundreds of docs too lol And then I went through this massive argessive atheism stage and started reading Dawkins and Hitchens and all them

...Ah yes...I remember that stage..there are times when I'm still going through it...one of the casualties of having religion rammed into you for all the wrong reasons..and at the time I never had the opportunity to discover there was more than one 'belief'

Yeah indeed, I don't really have many overtly religious friends, but I knew a couple of Christians that were "friends of the family" type, went to their church a few times, didn't like the message though. Now I'm apathetic to the whole religious thing, don't mind a good debate now and then though! lol

Yeah, I agree, some Atheists who actively go out to disprove all the time are as annoying as the theists who try enforce their beliefs on people.

I like the idea of 8 days of celebrating - makes it seem more meaniningful - given that Christmas Day is such a massive build up - and let's be honest - mostly commercial these days - and it's over in a flash.

As long as you are happy and enjoying: that's the most important thing. Plus you've got Christmas to go as well.

I'm lucky to have a mix of people in the family (my beautiful nieces are being raised Christian like their Mum but learn about the Jewish side too). It's even nicer that Hanukkah runs over Christmas this year, and that I'm going to get to share it with them.

I was saying this today.

We spend weeks building up excitement and whatnot and its over before you know it.

And your right, Christmas these days isnt soley a time to be with family, it's how much money you've spent sitting under the tree.

Christmas has become too commercial and it's a real shame.

My cousin is a prime example.

She has three young children and she's spent a mind boggling fortune on them. PS3's and iPod's. The oldest is 6

The three kids are the most spoilt little bastards going and the only concept they have of Christmas is presents, not family.

This surely is worthy of a repost on Arista's Xmas Stinks thread!

It's true though. Guy I used to work with - they had 2 young boys, spent literally a few grand on each of them for Xmas pressies.

3 days later he came in after the Christmas break, and said he was popping out to pick up a new TV for one of the boys.....I thought it was a present that he couldn't get in time for the big day....but oh no, the boy (an 8 year old) was being given it as a wee extra because had behaved himself over Christmas - having had thousands spent on him. Deary me

It wouldn't be bad but the majority of children these days don't appreciate presents, unless its an Xbox or PS3 or iPod.

My cousins children certainly don't and they behave like ***** all year. If they were mine they would get a toy each and be done with it.

I long for the days of old where you would be excited to get together with everyone and have a good old knee's up that ran into the early hours of Boxing Day.

The true spirit of Christmas has been thrown in the bin, along with countless receipts for unnecessary materialistic things.
