A bunch of beautiful bulldogs have been given some glad rags to compete for the title of Most Beautiful Bulldog in a pageant in Iowa.

It could be one of the few pageants in the world where the winner will be crowned for looking like an absolute dog.

Bulldog owners and their four-legged friends turned out in force in the hope of winning the beauty contest for the best dressed pooch.

The pageant, held at Drake University, sees the bulldogs compete for titles such as Best Dressed and Mr Congeniality.

With one pooch dressed as a cowboy, and another sporting a luxurious blonde wig, each and every competitor was dressed to impress - even though it is unclear if they actually know what the heck is going on.

A contestant that stood out in particular was Charlie, owned by Scott and Susan Hanson, who seemed to resemble a Reservoir Dog in his smart jacket, tie and very doggy sunglasses.

Another cracking competitor came decked out as Xena Warrior Princess - complete with a barely-there leather outfit and a rope to round up all the bad guys.

Despite the competition taking place in the US, this year's winner was a home-grown hero from the UK called Tyson.

The judges praised the canine's 'good looks and charm'
