Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt secretly backed News Corporation's bid for BSkyB and leaked information to the Murdochs, it emerged today as James Murdoch gave evidence to the Leveson Inquiry. A series of emails from News Corp's director of public affairs, Frederic Michel, sent to James Murdoch and other executives were read out at the hearing revealing Mr Hunt's thoughts about the controversal takeover plans.

Mr Michel's emails refer to "sessions" with Mr Hunt's special adviser, alongside a "very good debrief" with the minister himself - in this instance following Ofcom's decision to flag up the competition issues surrounding News Corp's bid for BSkyB.

In one email Mr Michel updated News Corp on what Mr Hunt was due to say to parliament the following day, adding that it was "absolutely illegal" for him to obtain the information. Shortly before a decision was due on News Corp's bid, another email was passed on from Mr Hunt's office noting: "JH believes we are in a good place tonight".

Another email, dating from January last year, reported Mr Hunt's belief that it would be "game over" for opponents of the BSkyB takeover once plans to spin off Sky News into a separately listed company were publicly announced.

"He said we would get there at the end, and he shared our objectives," Mr Michel noted.

Earlier emails from Mr Michel alleged that Mr Hunt was "on side" with News Corp and BSkyB, and was "frustrated" after being warned by the Permanent Secretary not to meet Murdoch.

The revelations have led to a flurry of wagers that Mr Hunt would leave the Cabinet, and bookmakers William Hill, Ladbrokes and Paddy Power all suspended betting on him resigning.

However, David Cameron's official spokesman told reporters that the Prime Minister continued to have full confidence in Mr Hunt following the claims.

"Now is not the time for knee-jerk reactions," Jeremy Hunt said tonight. They are the words of a cabinet minister fighting to save his job - and who, for now, has the prime minister's backing.

Given that the hacking scandal and its fallout has already claimed the scalps of Andy Coulson, Rebekah Brooks, many lesser-known Murdoch untouchables and the News of the World, Mr Hunt would be unwise to assume that he can now escape.

The case against him is clear. It is that whilst publicly insisting that he was dealing with an £8 billion-deal in a quasi-judicial way, his office was privately giving advanced and privileged information to James Murdoch and News Corp. The emails released today to the Leveson Inquiry show repeated examples of News Corp having information before the public, the markets and Parliament. This, Labour claim, was a breach of proper process and of Parliamentary rules.

No doubt he'll continue to lie through his teeth, saying that he wasn't aware of what his subordinates were doing, in the hope that he'll keep his well-paid and well-connected job .....

I'm beginning to wonder whether William Stobart should run the country - he makes a point of knowing everything going on in his business, from the state of the flower garden in a remote depot, through the identity of his apprentices and the profit from the sale of his trucks, to the development plans for his new airport .....

Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt has told MPs he "strictly followed due process" in the way he handled a controversial BSkyB takeover bid by News Corporation.

He said it was not true that the firm had any "back channel" of influence, when he was ruling on the bid.

His special adviser Adam Smith has quit over contact with the firm that he said "went too far".

But Labour's Harriet Harman said Mr Hunt had been "backing" rather than "judging this bid" and should resign.

Mr Hunt delivered his statement in a noisy House of Commons, following the publication of emails at the Leveson Inquiry relating to his handling of the takeover.

Labour say these show he fell short in his impartial "quasi-judicial" role in ruling on the company's bid to fully take over broadcaster BSkyB.

But Frederic Michel, head of public affairs at News Corp, has said his references to "JH" in emails were actually shorthand for Mr Hunt's special adviser, Mr Smith.

Mr Smith AKA JH .....

Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt's main aim was to "reach a fair and unbiased decision" on News Corp's bid for broadcaster BSkyB, his department's most senior civil servant has said.

Jonathan Stephens told the Leveson Inquiry Mr Hunt had been scrupulous in carrying out his quasi-judicial role.

A memo from Mr Hunt to David Cameron revealed he supported the deal, prior to overseeing the bid.

Permanent Secretary to the Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) Mr Stephens said he had been "particularly struck" by Mr Hunt's understanding of the proper processes required of his department when he took on the responsibility.

Meanwhile, Mr Cameron told ITV's This Morning that he did not "regret" asking Mr Hunt to rule on the bid and the culture secretary had acted "impartially".

The PM said: "The really crucial point is did Jeremy Hunt carry out his role properly with respect to BSkyB and I believe that he did."

Labour is demanding to know why the prime minister handed the adjudication over bid by Rupert Murdoch's company to buy the remaining shares it did not already own in BSkyB to Mr Hunt.

Shadow ministers argue that Mr Hunt was not an "impartial arbiter" on the deal, and has renewed calls for him to resign.

Shadow culture secretary Harriet Harman said: "David Cameron might think that he can brazenly say 'no regrets' and this will somehow draw a line under it, but people will not accept that.

"It was evident that he gave the decision on the Murdoch bid to Jeremy Hunt when he knew Jeremy Hunt was not impartially judging the bid but was in favour of the bid."

It's blatant partiality by Cameron to dump an anti in favour of a pro - couldn't he find a neutral amongst his chums .....

Jeremy Hunt has admitted he was sympathetic towards News Corporation's take over bid for BSkyB, but claimed he was never supportive of it.

Referring to the time when Business Secretary Vince Cable was still in charge of making a decision about the bid, the culture secretary said he believed the move would help sustain and modernise a healthy free media.

Nevertheless, Mr Hunt stressed he never did anything to support the takeover as he "wasn't actually going out and doing anything about it".

The Conservative minister was giving evidence to the Leveson Inquiry into media ethics.

AFAIK, Hunt has not been charged with any offence - it is, however, now patently obvious that he is a liar and a fully paid-up member of the Tory Office for Secret and Strategic Extracurricular Relationship Society.
